autoX Awards 2023: The youngest child of the family is often the naughtiest, and the TVS Apache RTR 310 is proof. It’s the latest 310 series motorcycle to come out of TVS and BMW’s collaboration, and from what we can tell, it’s the most thrilling and most fun motorcycle based on the platform. What’s even more interesting is that it doesn’t exude any feeling of familiarity – instead, it has a uniquely exuberant personality.

Even though the same 313cc engine from other TVS and BMW products powers it, the single-cylinder motor has been tweaked heavily to give the RTR 310 a more hooligan-like character.

The motor feels much livelier here than in any other BMW or TVS application. The fact that it runs a shorter final drive ratio makes it more eager to your throttle inputs. The performance is strong in simple words, as the throttle response is snappy and acceleration is brisk. You will also appreciate the fuelling, as the throttle never feels jerky.

On the flip side, the engine still suffers from vibrations, especially after 6,000rpm. And the short gearing doesn’t help this peculiar aspect of the engine either. The electronics, however, work really well, and the traction control doesn’t cut power abruptly. Simran was quite impressed with the RTR’s quickshifter and likened it to those of bigger and more premium motorcycles. The RTR’s handling is equally delightful, making it a precise tool for hunting corners. Since it’s based on a proven platform and comes with a fully adjustable suspension, you can tweak it for both the track and the road. The brakes, however, could have been better as they don’t have enough bite.

The RTR’s party piece is the features it packs. It gets a full suite of electronic aids, along with some cool features. We expected the RTR to be near the top in the final scores, which it did, although it fell short only by a few points. And that’s because the fully equipped variant is quite expensive and dangerously close to the KTM 390 Duke, which offers a lot more performance and equipment for only a few thousand rupees more.
