autoX Awards 2023: The EQE is the electric equivalent of Mercedes India’s best-selling SUV – the GLE, which is, in all probability, the best-selling luxury SUV in the country. Naturally, then, there are a lot of expectations from the EQE and its performance in the Indian market. While the overall silhouette of the EQE echoes that of recent SUVs from the brand, it incorporates several distinctive touches that make it stand out. For instance, the front grille – or the front plastic panel since it doesn’t need a grille being an EV – is adorned with multiple small three-pointed stars, which looks uniquely beautiful. Similarly, it features aerodynamically styled 20-inch wheels and a full-width taillamp at the rear. Just like the GLC, I think the Mercedes’ design team has played it safe with the EQE too and could have added a few bold touches to give it an edge in terms of design.

Again, just like the GLC, the EQE, too, has a captivating interior. The centrepiece here is the massive 56.0-inch Hyperscreen, which simply wows you with its expansive size and cutting-edge technology. It features a total of three screens – an instrument cluster, a multimedia touchscreen, and a dedicated screen for the passenger. The seats, with a heated massaging function, further amplify the luxurious in-cabin experience. The wooden piece in the centre console also features multiple mini three-pointed stars, which is a well-executed design element, exuding a sense of sophisticated craftmanship.

Powered by a 90.56kWh battery, the Mercedes-Benz EQE offers 858Nm of torque. On the road, it has all the performance that you’ll ever need. While the standard-fit air suspension offers very good ride quality, the all-wheel drive system helps you put down all that power efficiently on the road. All this made the EQE quite fast on the track during our test, scoring a commendable 10.7 points for lap time. However, had it not been for its weight of nearly 2.6 tonnes, I think it could’ve been a bit faster. Another side effect of this is that it necessitates a careful driving approach.

Another highlight of the EQE is its excellent refinement level, offering fantastic isolation from the outside world, which is also complemented by its excellent audio system. With its impressive blend of equipment, technology, usable range, and unique appeal, the EQE emerged as one of the very high scorers, coming tantalizingly close to being one of the winners.
