autoX Awards 2023: When I see the Hyundai Ioniq 5 on the road, I know that the person who owns it has both good judgement and great taste.

It’s not only one of the best cars to be launched in the past year but also one of the most uniquely styled and practical. Its 631-kilometre (claimed) range and 584 litres of boot space mean that this an EV that can actually be used for the occasional road trip in addition to the daily commute.

The cabin is also tremendously comfortable, spacious, and refined, so using it every day is a pleasure. The only trouble I have with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is that the ADAS system is overly eager with a warning about “children crossing ahead,” even when there are no children to be found! Fortunately, this warning can be silenced. Other than that, frankly, I can’t find fault with it. Well, other than the fact that the all-white interior will be hard to keep clean over time.

The perfect mix of retro and sci-fi in its design is inspired by a Hyundai model designed by Italian design house Guigario in the 70s. An especially nice element comes in the form of the individual pixels that make up the rear bar of the taillights – a touch of creativity that exquisitely blends 70s style with 21st century flash. The driving experience, however, is all 21st century. It’s incredibly refined, fast, and capable. In fact, the rear-wheel drive chassis means that this is an EV in which you can actually have a little bit of fun too if you’re so inclined. But, more than anything else, the Ioniq demonstrates that you can have cutting-edge EV motoring that’s practical and relatively affordable as well. A combination of factors that saw it claim World Car Electric Vehicle of the Year, World Car Design of the Year and, of course, overall World Car of the Year honours in 2022. It now also wins an autoX Best of 2023 award, and fittingly so.
