autoX Awards 2023: While the Hero Xoom wasn’t the fastest, best-looking, or most expensive two-wheeler in our mega test line-up, it certainly was the one that was appreciated the most. You see, during our annual test, we had multiple teams shooting at different locations at the track, necessitating a reliable vehicle to meet their diverse needs, like refreshments or a change of equipment. And the vehicle that was used the most extensively to meet these demands was the Hero Xoom. It’s easy to ride, has enough power, and has more than enough space to accommodate not only riders and passengers of all sizes but also various essentials. It was definitely the most utilised and the most user-friendly vehicle that we tested that day. With a 19.2-litre underseat storage, two bottle holders on the front plastic panel, and a large hook, the Hero Xoom virtually earned the status of an honorary autoX team member, given the extensive support it provided.
The Hero Xoom is the company’s attempt at making a sporty 110cc scooter, and while it didn’t set any records in our test, there is no doubt that it holds its ground rather competently in its segment. It’s powered by a single-cylinder air-cooled motor, which develops 8.1bhp and 8.7Nm of torque. Frankly, it’s different from a typical Hero engine. In terms of performance, the Hero Xoom never feels too eager or too brisk, with a power delivery that feels just right. It offers the right amount of oomph to keep you going without any complaints and the right amount of tractability to be hustled like a workhorse. Even in terms of braking, it offers just the right amount of bite to never let you go beyond your comfort zone. As I said, it feels ‘just right’.

However, I think one of its biggest drawbacks is its over-eager Intelligent start-stop system, which, at times, kicks in before the scooter comes to a complete halt. In terms of handling, too, the Hero Xoom is as good as a scooter with 12-inch wheels, both at the front and rear, can be. During the test, it felt light and responsive to rider inputs and was well-damped over the bumpy section of ICAT’s test track.
