autoX Awards 2023: Rarely a motorcycle that is as fast, committed, and nimble as the BMW S 1000 RR is rated so highly by our jury members on aspects other than performance. However, that is exactly what the S1000 RR has managed to achieve and not without reason. This super sports monster not only had the performance to definitively beat every other vehicle in our tests but was extremely user-friendly. The 2023 iteration of the S 1000 RR marks its fourth variation, and it’s safe to say that Bavarian marque has undoubtedly got a winner here. The first-generation S 1000 RR made waves in the world of everyday superbikes, with impressive performance. At a time when other manufacturers were barely hovering over the 150bhp mark, BMW Motorrad’s S 1000 RR offered an impressive power output of 190bhp. However, what truly set it apart was its exceptional usability both on and off the track. So light, smooth and forgiving, it was hard to believe you were actually on a super sport. The 2023 BMW S 1000 RR takes all these winning attributes and dials them up to 15.
The 2023 S 1000 RR is not just lighter but also more powerful and gets better electronics. And thanks to the changes in its chassis dynamics, it’s now much easier to handle. At the core of the 2023 S 1000 RR sits a 999cc liquid-cooled in-line four-cylinder engine, which develops 210bhp and 113Nm of peak torque. The biggest highlight of the BMW S 1000 RR is its ability to make this immense power accessible to riders of various skill levels, instilling a sense of confidence and control that can make anyone feel like a riding god. Now, I must add that it’s impossible for an average rider to fully exploit the performance potential of this machine; however, that doesn’t stop it from offering an exhilarating ride experience.

Thanks to the BMW Shift Cam technology, the S 1000 RR never feels too eager when you set off, but the moment you open the throttle, it unleashes a strong surge of power. Regardless of how hard you push the bike, it has always more to offer – that tells you something about the performance capabilities of this machine, doesn’t it?
In terms of handling, the electronically adjustable suspension definitely feels stiffer than any of its previous iterations, but at no point does it get too jarring. The electronic aids work with you, rather than against you, allowing you to push it harder. The traction control, wheelie control, and aerodynamic winglets ensure that you get the best acceleration without lifting the wheel, and the race-bred brakes give you immense stopping power. Around corners, the S 1000 RR feels like a well-oiled machine, offering optimal stability and precision for the best possible exit. Not surprisingly, the S 1000 RR was definitively the fastest machine we tested this year, and by a decent margin at that.
