If you believe in the popular adage, ‘size does matter’, you are sure to find the Aprilia SXR 160 intriguing. After all, it’s a considerably larger scooter – as it should be – than most conventional 100 – 125cc offerings. Aside from its size, it’s the signature Italian design that gives it an exceptional presence on the road. The RS 660-inspired LED headlight, large front fascia, tall windscreen, and long-wheelbase are all authentic maxi-scooter traits. The paint quality and well-finished alloy wheels further add to its style quotient. But for the price it demands, there is massive scope for improvement in terms of quality. For example, the plastics on the handlebar shrouds, the panel gaps, and the finish of the exhaust could do with some improvement.

The SXR 160 borrows its engine from the SR 160 and makes an identical 10.84bhp and 11.6Nm of torque, but it has been re-tuned to offer a more linear power delivery. The initial acceleration is good, but the performance starts to flatten beyond the 60km/h mark. Add to that its weight of 128kgs, and what you have is a scooter that’s a wee bit slower than some of the faster 125cc offerings. For instance, the less powerful TVS Ntorq 125, which we tested and awarded our ‘Best of 2018’, went around the short loop of the BIC in 1:33.5 – nearly a second faster than the SXR 160. Performance aside, this engine doesn’t quite set any benchmarks in terms of refinement either. It feels a bit gruff in comparison to most other scooters.

The SXR 160, however, does a decent job in the handling department. While it’s a heavy scooter, the stiff suspension setup ensures good cornering abilities – an aspect that makes it feel well-mannered and enjoyable. Of course, the nature of the suspension does affect its ride quality. And the firm seat cushioning further robs you of comfort. All in all, while the SXR looks like a bona fide maxi-scooter, it doesn’t feel like a thorough effort and has plenty of room for improvement in terms of refinement, quality, and comfort.
