Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) India has released its sales figures for the first quarter of the financial year 2025, clocking over 30 percent year-over-year (YoY) growth. The automaker sold&nbsp;1,371 units compared to the same period of the last financial year ending March 2024 (1,048 units). Furthermore,&nbsp;JLR said&nbsp;its wholesale volumes grew over 45 percent year-over-year in Q1 FY2025,&nbsp;creating record sales for the automaker.&nbsp;

JLR attributed this growth to its <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/land-rover/defender/">Defender</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/land-rover/range-rover/">Range Rover</a> lineups. The Defender along with the Range Rover Evoque accounted for over 50 percent sales growth, with the former emerging as the highest-selling model in Q1 FY2025. Moreover, the combined sales of the Range Rover,&nbsp;Range Rover Sport,&nbsp;and Defender made up 75 percent of the company's total order book.

In the Indian market, JLR currently retails the Range Rover, Defender, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/land-rover/discovery/">Discovery</a>, and the Jaguar F-Pace SUV. Speaking of which, the company recently added the&nbsp;most extreme and powerful&nbsp;model to the Defender lineup in India. Called the Octa, the model is&nbsp;priced from&nbsp;Rs 2.65 crore for the standard variant to Rs 2.85 crore for the Edition One. The bookings for both models are underway.

The Range Rover LWB and the&nbsp;Range Rover Sport, on the other side, will now be&nbsp;locally assembled in the country&nbsp;at JLR’s Chakan plant, joining the Velar, Evoque, Jaguar F-Pace,&nbsp;and Discovery Sport in the JLR’s&nbsp;lineup of vehicles produced locally. The&nbsp;Range Rover LWB starts&nbsp;at Rs&nbsp;2.36 crore, while the Range Rover Sport asks for Rs 1.40 crore. The prices are ex-showroom.&nbsp;

The Land Rover Defender along with the Range Rover Evoque accounted for over 50 per cent sales growth, with the former emerging as the highest-selling model in Q1 FY2025.

Jaguar Land Rover India has announced its best-ever sales results for the first quarter of the financial year 2023-24. Between the period of April and June 2023, JLR India sold 1,048 units, which is more than twice the number of units it retailed during the corresponding period in 2022-23.&nbsp;This marks the best-ever first-quarter sales for the Indian arm of the British automobile manufacturer. In comparison to the first quarter of FY2023, the manufacturer&nbsp;registered&nbsp;102 per cent sales growth in the first quarter of FY2024. The British luxury car brand owned by Tata Motors claims that its SUV portfolio led by the new Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport, and the Defender has played a significant role in the growth in the sales numbers&nbsp;in addition to the high demand for these models. These luxury SUVs made up about 78 per cent of its current order book, and they posted&nbsp;a&nbsp;year-on-year growth of 209 per cent, according to JLR India.&nbsp;&nbsp;

JLR further said that the present orders will cover more than 6 months of its sales. In the pre-owned vehicle segment, JLR India also witnessed high sales and registered an increase of 137 per cent&nbsp;in the first quarter of FY2024. JLR's rival&nbsp;Mercedes-Benz India&nbsp;witnessed its best-ever first-half sales performance. The Indian arm of the German luxury car manufacturer sold 8,528 units between January and June 2023, up from 7,537 units during the same period last year.

<h2>BMW Group India Sales Performance in H1 2023</h2>

In the&nbsp;first half of 2023,&nbsp;BMW Group India reported selling 5,867 automobiles (BMW and Mini), denoting&nbsp;a 5 per cent&nbsp;rise from 5,570 units sold during the same period in the previous year. Most of these numbers came from BMW, delivering&nbsp;5,476 cars to the buyers and&nbsp;marking a 5.5 per cent&nbsp;increase, as opposed to&nbsp;January to June of the previous year. Sales of Minis rose by 3% to 391 units.

<h2>2023 Range Rover Velar Launched in India</h2>

In recent news, Jaguar Land Rover&nbsp;launched the 2023 Velar SUV in the Indian market at Rs 93 lakh, which&nbsp;is Rs 3.59 lakh more expensive than the outgoing model. Both prices are ex-showroom. Bookings&nbsp;for the vehicle are already underway, and delivery will commence in September 2023. The SUV receives&nbsp;a number of aesthetic upgrades over the outgoing model, as well as a completely redesigned interior packed with tech-based amenities. Underneath the bonnet, the&nbsp;facelifted version gets&nbsp;two engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol engine&nbsp;and a 2.0-litre diesel unit with a mild-hybrid system. The petrol unit cranks out 247bhp and 365Nm, while the diesel mill generates 201bhp and 430Nm. For transmission, both motors use an 8-speed automatic gearbox. JLR claims that it has a top speed of 217km/h.&nbsp;

Speaking of the powertrain, the all-new Range Rover Sport SV will draw power from the modified 4.4-litre V8 engine, procured from BMW. The engine will be capable of putting out 598bhp and 750Nm. It will be the new ICE model of the firm. There is no official update, but the electric version of the SUV will likely hit the market sometime next year. In terms of design, according to the fresh teaser, the Range Rover Sport SV will sport large vents on the bumper at the front and quad exhausts at the back. Powertrain

A ClearSight IRVM, 22-way power adjustable seats with massage functions, dynamic air suspension, and Terrain Response 2 with adaptive off-road cruise control are among other features of the SUV.

The boot space now measures 835 litres, which is 55 litres more than the previous model.&nbsp;The Range Rover Sport is now available as a four- or five-seat vehicle with two rows. And since there is no third row in the model, it has a huge&nbsp;baggage compartment.&nbsp;

Exterior

The latest Range Rover Sport is also supported by the MLA Flex (Modular longitudinal architecture). The new SUV&nbsp;is 67mm longer than the outgoing model. Additionally, its wheelbase has increased by 74mm and its height by 17mm. The radiator grille and headlamps are thinner, and&nbsp;the front has a sporty appearance. The overall approach towards the design of the SUV is minimalistic. It also comes with flush-fitting door handles.&nbsp;Depending on the version, Land Rover has offered this SUV in&nbsp;a variety of paint schemes.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;‛predictive touch’ technology uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to determine the spot (early on in the pointing process) where the driver intends to touch the screen. A gesture tracker then uses vision-based or radio frequency-based sensors, in conjunction with&nbsp;other sensors, such as an eye-gaze tracker, to speed up the process and infer the&nbsp;user’s intent in real-time. The system is even claimed to&nbsp;work when the vehicle is going over uneven or bad roads, i.e. even when the vehicle is shaking.

With on-road trials already underway, JLR claims the contactless touchscreen can help reduce a driver’s touchscreen interaction time and effort by up to 50%, while also&nbsp;limiting the spread of bacteria and viruses. Moreover, this&nbsp;software-based solution can be integrated into existing touchscreen systems or interactive displays, provided the necessary sensory data is available to support the AI algorithm.

Is a 2.0-litre petrol motor punchy enough to sufficiently propel the 2-tonne weight of this Range Rover Sport down the road?

Over the last few years, Jaguar Land Rover seems to have shifted its focus towards petrol powered machines. Since the global unveiling of the Ingenium petrol motor in September 2016, the company has introduced petrol variants of the XE, XF, F-Pace, Discovery Sport, etc. The latest car to get the 2.0-litre Ingenium motor is the Range Rover Sport, which comes in the same state of tune as the F-Type 2.0. However, it’s considerably heavier. So, the question is this – can this motor really work in a luxury SUV, or has JLR gone a step too far with downsizing? Let’s find out. &nbsp;

Small, but meaty&nbsp; 
Jaguar Land Rover has always offered a plethora of engine options for the Range Rover Sport. While the 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol sits at the top in the SVR, until recently, the 3.0-litre V6 diesel was the base trim. Somewhere in the middle sit the 3.0-litre V6 petrol and the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel. The addition of a 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol motor makes this the most affordable Range Rover Sport on sale today. But don’t just shrug because this is the base variant, because there’s more here than meets the eye.&nbsp;

On paper, the engine specifications of this Range Rover Sport may not inspire a lot of confidence. But get behind the wheel, and all your reservations are immediately dismissed. The motor makes its peak torque of 400Nm from 1,500rpm, and the manner in which it pulls from there on really takes you by surprise. The torque spread is wide and goes all the way till 4,000rpm, and the motor feels meaty all the way to 6,000rpm. In terms of outright performance, it won’t knock your socks off, but it’ll certainly keep you interested.&nbsp;

Consider this — JLR claims that this 2.0-litre petrol turbo takes the Range Rover Sport from a standstill to 100km/h in just 7.3 seconds, which is just a tenth of a second slower than the more powerful 335bhp 4.4-litre V8 diesel. That said, you do sometimes feel the need to go hard on the right pedal – especially when you need urgent power. But this has more to do with the slight reluctance of the 8-speed automatic transmission while downshifting, rather than the outright grunt of the motor itself.&nbsp;

In terms of refinement, the Range Rover Sport gives you no reason to complain. The engine is quiet, and the cabin remains very well insulated.&nbsp;

The firm suspension setup and well-weighted steering ensure that the Range Rover Sport feels confident around bends. The all-wheel-drive system provides good grip, further adding to the overall drive experience. The sheer size and bulk of this SUV don’t go unnoticed, but, on the whole, it’s quite impressive.&nbsp;

From the inside&nbsp; 
Inside, the Range Rover Sport has a very well-appointed cabin. Although the RR Sport P300 sits at the bottom of the variant list, it still has InControl Touch Pro Duo – two touchscreens in the centre console, one for the infotainment system and the other for the climate control and driving modes. While the display is crisp, the response to touch isn’t as sensitive and accurate as some of the other cars in this price range.

Although the car has traditional knobs to regulate the temperature, you can only adjust the fan speed using the touchscreen, which requires you to take your eyes off the road. There is also a third screen for the instrument cluster, which is extremely informative – and I just love the way that you can customise the display as per your preference. You can opt for a single or a two-dial setup, navigation, or even media information. These customisations can be done using the touchpad on the steering wheel. Frankly, I would have preferred traditional buttons, but there’s no denying that these features make the car look and feel chic.&nbsp;

Verdict 
The prices of the 2.0-litre petrol-powered Range Rover Sport start at `86.71 lakh, while the mid-spec SE trim carries a sticker price of `94.49 lakh. And while that may sound like a lot, the Range Rover Sport 2.0 gets enough equipment to justify the price tag. JLR India marks its 10th anniversary in India by loaning a specially-prepped Land Rover Discovery Sport to Rapid Response NGO to be used for&nbsp;disaster-relief work across India.

In order to enhance the country's disaster-response force, especially with the prevailing monsoon season, JLR India has played its part in this mission by loaning a specially-prepped Land Rover Discovery Sport to the Rapid Response NGO. Rapid Response is actively involved in disaster management &amp; emergency crisis response services across&nbsp;India, since its inception in 2013. The Discovery Sport is expected to be utilised as an emergency responder, to provide medical assistance &amp; food distribution in remote areas of the country. Further, the event also marks JLR India's 10th anniversary.

Sharing his thoughts, Rohit Suri, President &amp; MD at JLR India said,&nbsp;'Land Rover vehicles, such as the Discovery Sport, are renowned for their capability in tackling difficult terrains and situations caused by floods and other such catastrophic events. On the occasion of completion of 10 years of Jaguar Land Rover in India, we are proud to offer a Land Rover to aid the team at Rapid Response in their efforts to help victims of such natural calamities in India.'

JLR India joins forces with Rapid Response NGO

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover have announced a strategic alliance to develop next-gen electrification technology for their vehicles. The partnership between the two brands will see them share their know-how and resources to engineer electric drive units for their vehicles. At the moment, neither of the brands has committed a timeline for the launch of their joint efforts, but they are hinting that the results of this partnership will only be out at the start of the coming decade, meaning after 2020.

As per a statement released by the BMW Group, the German car maker believes that Jaguar Land Rover share the ‘same strategic vision of environmentally-friendly and future-oriented electric drive technologies.’ Which is precisely why they decided to join forces with the Tata-owned British car marque. As for the ‘next-gen’ electrified vehicles, it’ll be based on the BMW’s fifth generation or ‘Gen 5’ electric drive unit that will debut in 2019 with the BMW iX3. Both the companies will work together on the subsequent evolution of the Gen 5 drive units, and will then incorporate them in their respective products as per the specific requirements.

For the new project, a team from BMW and Jaguar Land Rover will work jointly in Munich, and then each partner will produce the electric drive units in their own manufacturing facilities. The partnership will allow both the brands to take advantage of cost efficiencies – because of shared development – as well as economies of scale since they are also expected to have common suppliers. &nbsp;

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover will be working together to develop next-gen electric drive units for their future vehicles. A joint team of BMW and Jaguar Land Rover engineers will be working in Munich on the project.

The sensory steering wheel will use heating/cooling cues to inform drivers about an array of&nbsp;actions which need to be taken while driving.

Jaguar Land Rover, in partnership with Glasgow University, is working on yet another safety-oriented project aimed at reducing road fatalities. This time, the area of focus seems to the steering wheel. As part of the ongoing research, the development team has come up with a 'sensory steering wheel', parts of which can be quickly cooled or heated. Researchers at JLR claim that thermal cues can potentially keep drivers fully focused on the road. Thus, driver distractions are likely to reduce, and they should, for they are a major contributor to road fatalities globally.

Depending on the situation, the steering wheel grip can be quickly heated or cooled&nbsp;to inform drivers where to turn, when to change lane or to warn of an approaching junction. This could be particularly useful when visibility is reduced through poor weather or the layout of the road. Sensory cues work on both sides of the steering wheel, indicating the direction by rapidly warming or cooling one side. While the temperature difference has been kept at 6-degree Celsius by default, the driver can adjust the range of the temperature change based on his/her comfort.

Further, the technology can be also&nbsp;be applied to future autonomous vehicles, for example, to the gear-shift paddles to indicate when the hand over from manual&nbsp;to autonomous control&nbsp;is complete. Sharing his thoughts on the development,&nbsp;Alexandros Mouzakitis, Electrical Research Senior Manager at JLR, said, 'Safety is number one priority for Jaguar Land Rover, and we are committed to continuously improving our vehicles with the latest technological developments, as well as preparing the business for a self-driving future. The "sensory steering wheel"&nbsp;is part of this vision, with thermal cues being able to reduce the number of times drivers have to take their eyes off the road.'
