The 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix got off to a rough start for Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. After crashing in Turn 7 during the formation lap, he didn't even get to see the lights go out. Initially, it seemed that Leclerc might have caused the embarrassing crash, but, then, he swiftly communicated via radio that a hydraulic malfunction caused him to swerve into the wall. Leclerc was supposed to start the race in the second position, right behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The incident started with a little puff of smoke coming from behind his Ferrari SF-23, leading to a loss of control due to a problem with the rear axle. Subsequently, Leclerc found himself unable to steer the car, resulting in the crash and leaving his P2 slot on the grid vacant as the other 19 drivers began the race. When Kevin Magnussen, Nico Hulkenberg, and Alex Albon got into a crash, things became worse, forcing the race to a halt.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur said, 'We are very disappointed because we could have scored plenty of important points for the championship, but we lost Charles even before the start due to a reliability problem, which sent him off the track on the formation lap. He would have been starting on the front row and on top of that, we had sacrificed his Sprint chances yesterday to favour today’s Grand Prix. In a dramatic twist, Fernando Alonso managed to finish third, fending off severe pressure from Sergio Perez's Red Bull during the last stretch. Later during the first lap of the Brazilian Grand Prix, a multi-car accident right at the entry to the first corner resulted in a red flag situation. When Alex Albon collided with Nico Hulkenberg's Haas, it sent him rolling towards Kevin Magnussen's Haas. Hulkenberg continued at the back of the group while Albon and Magnussen retired after colliding with outer barriers.

The domino effect resulting from all this also affected Oscar Piastri and Daniel Ricciardo. The cars involved in the accident just missed Piastri's McLaren and Ricciardo's AlphaTauri. Thankfully, all of the racers were able to safely exit their vehicles.

Meanwhile, Lance Stroll is aiming for a podium finish after qualifying in third place, while Fernando Alonso, who will start from fourth, has stressed the importance of a successful race weekend for the team. On Saturday, Interlagos will host the season-ending Sprint for the 2023 season. Friday only saw one practice session, as the qualifying was spoiled by last-minute rain that prevented many teams, including McLaren and Mercedes, from posting competitive times.

Stroll finished in sixth place during the initial practice session (FP1), demonstrating that Aston Martin showed good speed on the opening day. He took this form into qualifying, finishing in sixth position after the first round and later advancing to the second round in tenth place by the slimmest of margins. Stroll qualified third with a time of 1 minute, 11.344 seconds in the pivotal Q3 session, which was cut short by rain. Even though he finished over six-tenths of a second behind Max Verstappen, who secured pole position, this marked his first top-three start since the Turkish Grand Prix in 2020.
