According to the firm, the motorcycle is produced for leisurely riding and opulent touring. Black Storm Metallic, Gravity Blue Metallic, Manhattan Metallic Matte, Option 719 Mineral White Metallic, and Option 719 Galaxy Dust Metallic/Titan Silver 2 Metallic are the five colours available for the BMW R 18 Transcontinental.</p>

The engine produces 91bhp of the highest power at 4,750rpm and 158Nm of maximum torque at 3,000rpm, with more than 150Nm available between 2,000rpm and 4,000rpm. It comes paired with a six-speed gearbox. The new bike has a shaft drive system, according to BMW, and has a top speed of 189km/h.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Updated instrumentation with four circular analogue gauges and a 10.25-inch TFT screen is a significant feature update. A Marshall Gold Series Stage 2 audio system with six speakers and a subwoofer is also included with the R18 Transcontinental.<br />
BMW has also offered a variety of features to the motorcycle, including dynamic engine braking, reverse gear, hill start assist, &nbsp;steering stabilizer, cruise control, ABS, automatic stability control, and riding modes.</p>

<h2>2023 BMW R18 Transcontinental: Hardware</h2>

<p>BMW has mounted the boxer powertrain inside a double-cradle frame, supported by monoshocks and telescopic front forks. The new model has twin 300mm front discs and a single 300mm rear disc with dual-channel ABS. It rides on 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels with 120/70 and 180/65 tyre sizes, respectively. A 24-litre fuel tank with four litres of extra space is provided for the R 18 Transcontinental. The bicycle weighs 427kg in total.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>2023 BMW R18 Transcontinental: Engine and Transmission</h2>

<p>The R 18 Transcontinental is powered by an air/oil-cooled two-cylinder flat twin engine. This&nbsp;massive 1,802cc engine generates 91bhp of maximum power at 4,750rpm and 158Nm of peak torque at 3,000rpm, with more than 150Nm always available between 2,000 and 4,000rpm. The torque is transmitted to the transmission via a single-disc dry clutch. The 6-speed constant mesh gearbox is housed in dual-section aluminium housing and is a 4-shaft transmission with helical gear pairs. A countershaft connects the transmission input shaft with cleat dampers to the two transmission shafts with gear wheel pairs.</p>

Rather, a telescopic fork and a directly mounted cantilever suspension strut with adjustable spring preload and travel-dependent damping offer better suspension comfort and wheel control. The braking system has four-piston fixed callipers along with dual disc brakes in front and a single disc brake in the rear.</p>

The engine provides optimal throttle response in 'Roll' mode&nbsp;while riding dynamics achieve ideal performance on all roads. With Active Cruise Control, the rider&nbsp;can ride in complete relaxation. The traction control can be disengaged whether the road is dry or wet, and Automatic Stability Control claims to offer&nbsp;flawless control. Electronically, Dynamic Engine Brake Control stops the rear wheels from sliding when the throttle is suddenly closed or the back spacing changes. Further, the bike&nbsp;also has Hill Start Control.&nbsp;The traditional ignition steering lock is replaced by the Keyless Ride System, which also provides central locking for the bike and storage containers. BMW Motorrad India has finally launched the highly anticipated R 18 Transcontinental at Rs 31.50 lakh (ex-showroom) in the country. Now, the firm has the R 18, the R 18 Classic, and the R 18 Transcontinental in its cruiser category for the market.

<p>After much anticipation, BMW Motorrad has finally pulled the wraps of the R 18. While BMW has naked offerings, sports bikes as well as ADVs in their product portfolio, they don't quite have a cruiser in their line-up. The German bike maker has now filled the gap with the official unveiling of the R 18. This is not the first time that BMW has entered in the cruiser territory. The company produced the R1200C from 1997 to 2004. It was powered by a 1,170cc heart that made 61 horses and 98Nm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Coming back to the R18, BMW first showcased it in various avatars at the EICMA show in November 2019. As the name rightly suggests, the R 18 comes fitted with a beautifully crafted 1,802cc twin-cylinder boxer engine that produces 90bhp at 4,750rpm. Max torque is rated at 158Nm, and more than 95% of which kicks in as low as 2,000rpm. The engine comes paired with a 6-speed transmission. BMW Motorrad claims that the R 18 can do the 0-100km/h mark in just 4.8 seconds, and record a top-speed of 180km/h. Stopping power comes from twin 300mm discs up front and an identical single disc at the rear.</p>

<p>Coming to the design, thanks to the round headlight, the long rake, loads of chrome bits, and that analogue instrument cluster, the R 18’s design is typically retro cruiser. Some design elements are reminiscent of the old R5 too – like the headlight, fuel tank and even the seat. The attention to detail all around is exquisite. The exposed drive shaft and the large chrome plated exhaust add a sense of contrast to the overall design as well. The overall fit and finish, the uncovered steel-tube frame and the low-slung stance come together in perfect harmony to make the R 18 look absolutely fantastic.</p>

<p>Although the design of the R 18 screams retro, its feature list is anything but that. The R18 comes with ride-by-wire and three riding modes – Rain, Rock and Roll. Other features include stability control, dual channel ABS, and for those who tick the options box, there’s also the hill start control and reverse assist.</p>

<p>BMW will only offer the R 18 in limited numbers carrying a ‘First Edition’ badge. In the United Kindom the R 18 is priced at £18,995 (Rs 17.8 lakh approx.). While there is no confirmation as yet, if BMW brings the R 18 to Indian shores, it is likely to be priced around the Rs 22 lakh mark. At that price point, the R 18 will compete against the likes of the Harley Davidson Fat Boy.</p>
