The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has revealed a plan for making six airbags mandatory on all passenger cars. As of now, this rule is expected to go into effect from October, 2022, and will see the cost of mass-market cars rise by Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000.

Hyundai has introduced a new centre-side airbag, which is deployed at the centre to provide side impact protection (in case there is no front passenger) to the driver or to avoid head injuries (in case a front passenger is present) to either front occupant by avoiding a collision between the two.

A recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed that not only knee airbags have a negligible effect on injury risk, but in some cases, may even increase it.
