If you’ve paid any attention at all to this magazine over the years, you’ll know that my prized possession is a 1992 BMW 325i. I’ve painstakingly restored it to former glory – and beyond possibly! But now it’s getting lonely, I can sense it. It’s hoping for a brother or sister. So what better than the current generation 328i? It looks sharper, is faster, and will likely be more reliable – and not too horribly out of reach either if I can get a good deal on the right car.

But, then, recently I drove the brand new Ford Endeavour in Thailand. Now, typically, I don’t feel the need to have my manliness defined by the size of car that I drive (says the man who drives a Fortuner everyday [it’s practical, okay]). But the Endeavour is refined, not bad looking, very comfortable, and immensily capable. Most of all, though, it’ll be more than capable of dealing with our rivers – um, roads I mean!

It’s hard to tell during the monsoon – at least in our Capital city. I mean what is it about drains that’s so incredibly complicated for our municipal corporations to figure out. After all, the Romans seemed to have a pretty good handle on it – perhaps there’s a handbook lying about from Ceaser’s time that we could consult. You see, SUV’s are great on the drive to Leh, but when people are forced to adopt one for the daily commute then it’ll lead to our already clogged roads getting even more chocked. It’s little wonder, then, that crossovers are getting so popular (see our cover story this month). People need them just to clear the knee-high stream on the way to work three months of the year.

So, unless I can get a serious lift kit for a contemporary 3 Series, it seems that my 325 will just have to share garage space with a behemoth SUV rather than a distant Bavarian cousin. Or maybe I ought to just hunt down that Roman drainage handbook instead… and a Latin translator while I’m at it as well I suppose!
