The Swedish company has dropped a teaser video of the upcoming performance brand, and has been constantly teasing the debut model in unique puzzle images on Instagram.
Polestar, Volvo Car Group’s performance arm, will reveal its future as a standalone electric performance brand, as well as its first model, in Shanghai on October 17, 2017.
Previously, Polestar was Volvo’s performance sub-brand, much like what AMG is to Mercedes. However, with electrification being the automotive flavour of 2017, Volvo took the opportunity to tap into the potentially huge market by morphing Polestar into a standalone, electrified high-performance vehicle brand.
Polestar will share specific technological and engineering aspects with Volvo Cars, while also benefiting from significant economies of scale. All of this will provide Polestar with the necessary resources to design, develop and build electrified high-performance cars.
The brand has already revealed that it’s debut model would be a performance coupe. However, whether the car will be production ready or still in its concept form remains unconfirmed.
Industry rumours suggest that the debut Polestar coupe will use a modified version of the powertrain currently used on the XC90 T8 hybrid. The setup is a 2.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to an electric motor - which in the XC90 pumps a combined 401bhp and 640Nm. Expect the Polestar coupe to exceed these figures.
Polestar was introduced in India earlier in 2017 with the hot Volvo S60 Polestar. When the reconstructed, standalone brand enters the country is yet to be seen.
