The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) has completed its first BS-VI certification for a heavy-duty engine model for Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles (VECV).
This activity, which has been completed much ahead of the compliance implementation date of April 1, 2020, has given both ICAT and VECV much exposure on certain key areas to be kept in mind while undertaking the BS-VI development and certification testing.
ICAT is the prime testing agency that is recognised by the Government of India for Type Approval and Homologation of vehicles in India. It is a technical agency that’s equipped with proper equipment and labs required to carry out the testing and validation trials for upcoming BS-VI regulations to help the Indian automotive industry with its testing and certification requirements.
The significant test centres at ICAT’s facility include:
Electromagnetic Compatibility Lab
This lab is equipped with shielded semi-anechoic chambers that help test various electrical components of a vehicle. Furthermore, it aids in troubleshooting, research and development of components and vehicle designs from electromagnetic compatibility perspective.
Passive Safety Lab
Passive Safety Lab has been designed to support the industry in the field of crash testing, pedestrian protection testing, sled testing, airbag deployment testing and other similar parameters. The lab has equipment that can conduct crash testings as per Indian and international regulations, including Global NCAP’s protocols.
Noise Vibration and Harshness Lab
This is the first of its kind facility in India where a vehicle's exterior & interior noise analysis, sound source identification, modal testing on components and other related parameters are tested. The NVH Lab is further divided into six facilities – Passenger Car Semi-Anechoic Chamber, Heavy Duty Semi-Anechoic Chamber, Modal Room, Coupled Acoustic Rooms, Listening Room and Instrumentation. Tests like simulating external pass by noise are carries out here to help vehicles meet regulatory requirements.
Tyre Test Lab
ICAT includes a dedicated tyre testing facility. This lab includes five tests – Speed Performance & Endurance Test Rig, Dual Station Endurance Test Rig, Plunger and Bead Unseating Test Rig, Tyre Dynamic Growth Test Rig and Tyre Rolling Resistance Test Rig.
