A team from Volkswagen’s Pune plant took top honours in Mechatronics category of WorldSkills India in New Delhi and will represent the country in World Finals later this year.

Known as the ‘Olympics for Skill’, WorldSkills International Competition is held every other year to foster the development of skills amongst the youth across the world. This year’s event is staged in the Brazilian capital of Sao Paulo from August 11 to 16.

The winning team of Rajiv Mishra and Varsha Pawale made it this far, after beating 1050 participants in 113 regional, national and final rounds. They also bagged the award for 'Best of Champions' for scoring the highest points in 19 skills.

Mr. Anshuman Srivastava and Mr. Sagar Kawade - representing another team from Volkswagen Academy - emerged as 1st runners up to round off a strong result for the German car maker.

On the occasion, Volkswagen’s Head of HR, Mr. Peter Raussendorf, commented, “Our apprentices have made us proud with their performance at the national level of WorldSkills. It underlines the high quality of training they have received through our Dual Apprenticeship Programme for Mechatronics and validates our efforts towards developing highly skilled manpower for the manufacturing industry.

“I am sure that the team will do its best at the WorldSkills International Competition 2015 later this year in Brazil. It will be an unforgettable experience for them when they will compete against the best in the world,’’ he added.

All winners were selected by a jury of 58 members who are experts in their respective fields.
