The Uttar Pradesh government is waiving the registration fee entirely for eco-friendly hybrid vehicles to encourage the sale of these vehicles. This move may help hybrid car manufacturers including Maruti Suzuki India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, and Honda Cars India. Several media sources state that the government of Uttar Pradesh has declared a 100% registration fee waiver for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). For the uninitiated, an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor are features shared by both HEVs and PHEVs. The larger battery of the latter, which requires an external power supply for charging, is the primary distinction between both types of vehicles.

No Registration Fee for Hybrid Vehicles

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) offers HEV technology in the Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV, Camry sedan, and the Innova Hycross MPV, whereas Maruti Suzuki provides the same in the popular Grand Vitara SUV and the Invicto MPV. The tech is also available in Honda's City e:HEV car.

Buyers in the state can save more than Rs 3 lakh on the Maruti Suzuki Invicto and the Toyota Innova Hycross, and more than Rs 2 lakh on the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda City e:HEV, thanks to the UP government's waiver of the registration fee for HEVs.

How Much Can the Buyers Save?

For those who purchase hybrid cars in Uttar Pradesh, this new initiative offers significant savings. Strong hybrid cars were formerly not eligible for government subsidies and the owners of the same had to pay the full registration fees. Here's an overview of the approximate cost reductions for various popular models.

Model Previous Price New Price Savings
Toyota Camry Rs 52.74 lakh Rs 48.34 lakh Rs 4.4 lakh
Toyota Innova Hybrid (Base VX) Rs 30.13 lakh Rs 27.03 lakh Rs 3.10 lakh
Toyota Hyryder Strong Hybrid Rs 19.23 lakh Rs 17.23 lakh Rs 2 lakh

The Toyota outlets located in Noida and Greater Noida attest to these cost savings. Maruti Suzuki's hybrid models and the Honda City hybrid will likely see comparable price reductions as well.

The effort is in line with the state's larger initiatives to reduce pollution and support environmentally friendly transportation options. The UP government intends to see a significant increase in the usage of hybrid vehicles by lowering their price, which will help to promote healthier environments and cleaner air.

The Maruti Suzuki Invicto is a badge-engineered variant of the Toyota Innova Hycross.
