The Punch, Tata Motors' most affordable SUV, has surpassed the four lakh sales mark. After going on sale in October 2021, the Tata Punch reached this impressive sales milestone within 3 years (34 months) of launch. The subcompact model's muscular appearance, elevated stance, and high ground clearance helped to establish it as a reliable name in the new micro SUV market. The car's popularity can also be attributed to the fact that it comes with three different engine options: fully electric, CNG, and petrol. The Punch EV was introduced to the lineup in January this year.

Sharing his thoughts on the launch, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility said, 'Tata Motors has always been known for its deep understanding of the Indian consumer. This attribute enables us to create disruptive yet highly functional products. With the Punch, we not only introduced the Indian market to a new sub-segment but also successfully democratized the SUV attributes by offering a comprehensive package in a compact footprint. We are elated that the Punch has resonated so well with Indian consumers and has progressively found a loyal customer base, who have become its biggest brand ambassadors. We take great pride in crossing this milestone and are confident that the next 1 Lakh will be achieved even faster.'

The Punch was introduced in October 2021, and just ten months later, in August 2022, it achieved its first one-lakh sales milestone. The model proved to be an immediate hit for the manufacturer, and sales kept growing until May 2023, when they crossed the two lakh sales milestone. In December last year, the next one lakh sales were recorded in just seven months, and, it took another seven months to reach the 4 lakh sales milestone.

The Tata Punch's sales are primarily driven by its petrol model, accounting for 53% of total sales. The CNG variant follows at 33%, and the EV option accounts for 14%. According to the homegrown carmaker, the sales of the Punch increased by 75% in FY2024 compared to the previous year, giving it a 68% market share in the category. Additionally, the brand has found great success with the Punch EV, which has helped the Punch brand's overall sales rise by 15%. For those unaware, it is the first EV in India to achieve 13,000 sales.

The Punch's success is further demonstrated by the fact that it leads all vehicle segments in sales (YTD FY25), with a 17.7% market share in the compact SUV segment. The Punch has been the best-selling SUV from January to June 2024, with a 27% year-over-year (YoY) rise in sales for FY24.

Tata Punch SUV: Powertrain Options

The Tata Punch's ICE variant is equipped with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine which can also be fitted with a CNG kit. The motor produces 84bhp and 113Nm while running on petrol.
