The electric vehicle (EV) division of Tata Motors announced that it has slashed costs of its vehicles by up to Rs 1.2 lakh, marking the first time an electric manufacturer in India has done so. After a Rs 70,000 price drop, the Tiago EV now starts at Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom). On the other hand, there is a price cut of up to Rs 1.2 lakh for the Nexon EV. Accordingly, the ex-showroom price of the electric sub-compact SUV now stands at Rs 14.49 lakh, while that of the Long Range variant is Rs 16.99 lakh. The battery pack is one of the primary cost components of electric vehicles. The prices of EVs have recently decreased as a result of a slight fall in the cost of battery cells. Additionally, the firm confirmed that the costs of the Punch EV would remain intact, as the reduced battery prices were already included in at launch. Similarly, prices for the Tigor EV are unaltered.
Speaking about the latest price cut, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, TPEM, said, “Battery costs constitute a substantial part of the overall cost of an EV. With battery cell prices having softened in the recent past and considering their potential reduction in the foreseeable future, we have chosen to proactively pass on the resulting benefits directly to customers. While EVs have grown rapidly over the last few years, our mission is to accelerate the mainstream adoption of EVs by making them more accessible nationwide. Our portfolio already offers a wide choice of body styles, ranges, and price points for our smart, feature-rich EVs. We believe that at these accessible prices, the best-selling Nexon.ev and Tiago.ev become an even more compelling proposition to attract a larger pool of customers.”
Tata Nexon EV: Battery Pack, Features, and Other Details
The Nexon EV is available in Medium-Range and Long-Range models, which correspond to the Prime and Max versions marketed previously. Mechanically, the facelifted iteration comes with two battery sizes: 30.2kWh for the Nexon MR and 40.5kWh for the Nexon LR. The first one belts out 127bhp of maximum power and 215Nm of peak torque, whereas the latter produces 141bhp and 215Nm of torque. The company has fitted the car with a new Gen2 permanent magnet synchronous motor that is claimed to be lighter, cleaner, and more efficient.
The MR and LR variants have driving ranges of 325-kilometre (MIDC) and 465-kilometre (MIDC) on a single charge, respectively. Both versions allow 7.2kWh rapid charging and, for the first time, include vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-vehicle charging capabilities. Tata claims that the electric derivative can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 8.9 seconds and peak out at 150km/h due to improved aerodynamics.
Numerous amenities set the electric Nexon apart, such as a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a 9-speaker JBL sound system with a subwoofer, cruise control, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, Google and Alexa voice assistants, and more. Moreover, the higher-spec models come with a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen. Besides these, the revamped EV boasts several safety features, including automated headlights, blind spot monitoring, ISOFIX child seat mounts, a 360-degree camera, front parking sensors, six airbags as standard, and rain-sensing wipers.
Tata Tiago EV: Mechanical Specs and Feature Set
The electric Tiago comes in two battery sizes: 19.2kWh (Medium Range) and 24kWh (Long Range). When combined with an electric motor, the former produces 60bhp and 110Nm, while the latter puts out 74bhp and 114Nm. The hatchback's advertised range with these battery packs is between 250-kilometre and 315-kilometre.
A 4-speaker Harman sound system with four tweeters, auto air conditioning, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are just a few of the Tiago EV's many features. To enhance the safety quotient, there is a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, two front airbags, a rearview camera, an ABS with EBD, and steering-mounted controls.
