Tata Motors' Sanand Plant Surpasses 10 Lakh Unit Production Mark

Established in 2010, Tata's Sanand plant in Gujarat is spread across 1,100 acres – 741 acres (TML) and 359 acres (Vendor Park), with over 6000 direct and indirect employees.

Tata Motors has announced the rollout of the 10,00,00th unit at its state-of-the-art plant in Sanand (in Gujarat) with the Tata Tiago being the milestone vehicle. This landmark was achieved two months after Tata commenced production of passenger vehicles from its new facility. 

Established in 2010, Tata's Sanand plant is spread across 1,100 acres – 741 acres (TML) and 359 acres (Vendor Park). It can manufacture electric and ICE vehicles depending on the requirement, and includes a press line, weld shop, paint shop, assembly line and powertrain shop. Currently, the plant produces the Tiago, Tiago AMT, Tiago.ev, Tiago iCNG, Tigor, Tigor AMT, Tigor EV, Tigor iCNG, and XPRES-T EV (for fleet operators). Tata says a single-model plant has been successfully converted into a multi-model plant churning out three models with 100 per cent asset management and utilisation.

Tata Motors' Sanand Plant: A Quick Look at the Past

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEML), Tata Motors' electric subsidiary, had signed a Unit Transfer Agreement (UTA) in August 2022 to acquire the former Ford India plant for Rs 725.7 crore, including the entire land and building, vehicle manufacturing machinery and equipment, and the transfer of all eligible employees. And within a year after that, Tata Motors completed the acquisition of Ford India's manufacturing plant, which is said to have a production capacity of 3 lakh units per year scalable to 4.20 lakh units per year.

Tata Motors to Demerge Biz into Two Separate Cos.

In other news, Tata Motors recently announced its plans to demerge the company into two separate publicly traded entities: one that focuses on the commercial vehicles business and the other on the passenger vehicles business, which will include electric vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover.
