A few weeks ago, Tata Motors invited us to Jamshedpur to celebrate the 60th birthday of its manufacturing facility in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. The first manufacturing unit of Tata, which was set up in 1945, was initially intended to make steam locomotives at first – but soon began manufacturing trucks too.
In 1954, it brought the latest global trucking technology of the time to India – and since then the plant has been host to the latest technologies that this world has to offer. The perfect blend of dedication and state-of-the-art technology means that a new truck rolls off the assembly line every five minutes. The assembly also takes pride in manufacturing over 200 Tata Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles, which cater not only millions of Indians, but also to the Indian army that needs high performance vehicles that are also durable. The Jamshedpur plant also flaunts a private testing facility where these trucks go through rigorous testing before they are delivered to the market. It is this sustained level of dedication that ensured that its two millionth vehicle rolled out of the plant in 2013.
The plant also acts as Tata Motors’ development and manufacturing hub, which specialises in carrying out complex vehicle design. The manufacturing unit also develops complex intelligent electronic control systems of next-generation trucks, cabins, multi-axle trucks, tractor, trailers and tippers. The Jamshedpur plant is also capable of manufacturing trucks that comply with EURO VI or BS VI norms.
Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Ravindra Pisharody, Executive Director – Commercial Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “We, at Tata Motors, are proud to have achieved yet another trucking milestone of 60 years of manufacturing excellence at our plant here in Jamshedpur. From the very beginning, Tata Motors Jamshedpur has lead the transformation in the Indian commercial vehicles space – setting benchmarks through the introduction of class-leading trucks – with the most relevant global technologies, incorporating flexibility to develop and manage ourcurrent and future portfolio, with speed and in-line with varied market requirements. With world-class quality manufacturing and engineering programs here in Jamshedpur, it is in our continuous endeavour to remain the most preferred trucking brand.”
