This is the first time that postal stamps based on various modes of transport have been released in the country.
The Department of Posts, India has for the first time in its history issued postal stamps on modes of transport. These stamps showcase the history of gradual progression in the modes of transportation in our country through 20 postage stamps in the form of miniature sheets in a prestige booklet.
The inspiration for these 20 stamps came from the artwork and artefacts displayed at the Heritage Transport Museum in Gurgaon. In fact, over 15 stamps are directly adapted from the Museum's collection. Of the newly introduced stamps, there’s a set of 4 stamps each on Palanquins, Animal driven Carriages & Carts, Rickshaws, Vintage Cars & a mixed set of 4 stamps on Public Transport depicting buses, tram & metro.
The Heritage Transport Museum was opened to the public in 2013 as India’s first comprehensive transport museum. The collection at the museum is not only directly related to transport, but also showcases the socio-cultural life and art associated with it, says its founder. As for the museum itself, it has over 2,500 curated objects on display that reflect India’s transportation history. The museum is categorised into various sections such as pre-mechanized & heavy mechanised transportation, railways, aviation, maritime, collectable Indian toys on transport, rural & indigenous transportation, two wheelers and popular & tribal art section.
