Ola is back on August 15, with a host of surprises like before, including the introduction of its in-house manufactured lithium batteries, dubbed 'Bharat Cell', which will be employed in its EVs by Q1 FY26. Backed by more than 70 patents, the innovative 4680 Bharat Cell is claimed to offer 5 times more energy density, 1.5 times faster charging, and an increase of 10% in range over the 2170 cells currently employed on the company's scooters. It marks a new chapter in India's 'Atmanirbharta' initiative by minimising dependency on imports.
In addition to being utilized in Ola's electric vehicle fleet, the cutting-edge cells can be used for the grid and residential energy storage. Their low cobalt content and high energy density add to performance and affordability. Notably, these cells will be produced at the Ola Gigafactory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. In addition to the battery cell, Ola displayed MoveOS 5, the new Gen-3 platform, and its Roadster e-bike series at its event. Let's take a short glimpse at the key specs of these new offerings.
Ola Electric Roadster Series
Based on the Gen 3 platform, the Roadster series includes three versions: Roaster X, the Roadster, and the Roadster Pro. Pricing-wise, the range starts at Rs 75,000 for the 2.5kWh Roadster X model and goes up to Rs 2.50 lakh for the top-of-the-line 16kWh Roadster Pro. All prices are ex-showroom. Pre-orders for these motorcycles are now underway, while deliveries are scheduled to begin in Q4 FY25.
Gen-3 Platform
Ola's other major highlight is the new Gen-3 platform, which includes 4680 cells with increased energy density and charging abilities. Its primary focus is on integrating components. By positioning the battery pack and motor in closer proximity, Ola has produced a powertrain that is more compact and effective. This innovative design maximizes the amount of space within the vehicle while decreasing its total weight. The platform also features a lesser wire harness. Eliminating a complicated system of wires has allowed the manufacturer to improve dependability, and performance, and simplify the manufacturing process.
