Camcon Automotive claims that their new Intelligent Valve Actuation (IVA) can deliver diesel engine levels of fuel economy from petrol engines.
As we demand better emissions, better fuel economy and cleaner air to breathe, the internal combustion engine has been put under the microscope to extract every unexplored potential from it.
A small engineering company in the UK believe they may have an answer by throwing away the camshaft altogether. Camcon Automotive has devised a solution called Intelligent Valve Actuation (IVA) that operates engine cylinder valves electronically instead of camshafts. The electronic control module sits inside the cylinder head and controls each valve individually with rotary actuators. With the ability to individually control each valve, IVA can adjust any part of the engine’s airflow with new found precision as required at any given time.
The result of this is reduced emission, better fuel economy, increase in power and improved drivability as IVA will allow infinite control over the engine timing and deliver exactly what the driver needs at any precise moment. The physical benefits will allow engines to lose the entire camshaft unit, thus lowering the height and weight from the top, and also discarding the belt drive from the front of the engine. Resulting to an engine which will be smaller in size, have a lower centre of gravity and be lighter overall.
Camcon claims that their product has a modular design which allows it to be fitted onto existing conventional engines and has been tried and tested enough that it can see actual production in three year’s time.
