India's leading automaker, Maruti Suzuki, saw a 2 per cent dip in total wholesale figures from the previous year, with over 1.74 lakh units sold in May 2024. The company stated that it had shipped more than 1.78 lakh cars to its dealers in the comparable month of 2023. Furthermore, the overall domestic passenger vehicle sales increased slightly to 1.44 lakh units last month from about 1.43 lakh units in May 2023. Maruti Suzuki Sales Figures: May 2024
The sales of models like the Alto and S-Presso, which come under the mini-segment, decreased from 12,236 units in May 2023 to 9,902 units in May 2024. Moreover, the sales of compact cars like the Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, WagonR, Tour S, and Swift, also fell, from 71,419 units in May last year to 68,206 units in May this year.

However, sales of utility vehicles, such as the S-Cross, XL6, Grand Vitara, Brezza, and Ertiga, increased to 54,204 units this month from 46,243 units in May 2023. Coming to the sales figure for vans, there was a dip with 10,960 units sold in May 2024 as compared to 12,818 units sold in the same month the previous year, while light commercial vehicle Super Carry sales increased to 2,692 units from 2,888 units in May 2023. According to the manufacturer, its exports decreased to 17,367 units last month from 26,477 units during the same time last year.
New Maruti Suzuki Swift Crosses 40,000 Bookings Mark
In other news, Maruti Suzuki Swift has surpassed the 40,000 bookings mark in India. The automaker opened the reservations for the hatchback on May 1. A few days ago, Maruti Suzuki revealed that the new Swift sold 19,393 units last month, making it the best-selling model in its debut month. The 2024 Swift is available in five variants: LXi, VXi, VXi (O), ZXi, and ZXi+. The price of the car starts at Rs 6.49 lakh and goes up to Rs 9.64 lakh (ex-showroom).

The brand currently provides a Z-series 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine for the next-gen Swift. The new motor, which replaces the previous K-Series engine, is tuned to produce 80bhp at 5,700rpm and 112Nm of peak torque at 4,300rpm. The engine is paired with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic gearbox. In terms of mileage, the manual variant averages 24.8km/l, while the automatic version averages 25.75km/l.
