As of the end of March 2024, Maruti Suzuki has crossed the cumulative production milestone of 3 crore (30 million) passenger vehicles in India. While the company manufactured over 2.68 crore units at its Haryana-based facilities, the remaining 32 lakh vehicles came from Suzuki Motor Gujarat, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MSIL. It took the company 40 years and 4 months to register this milestone, which is the fastest among Suzuki production bases in Japan. Meanwhile, Suzuki achieved the same in 55 years and 2 months in its home country.
Suzuki began manufacturing operations in India in December 1983 with its first model, the iconic Maruti 800 or M800. Produced by the then Maruti Udyog Ltd., the Maruti 800 contributed to the milestone with more than 29 lakh units. Other contributors are the Alto, Swift, Dzire, WagonR, Baleno, Omni, Brezza, Ertiga, and Eeco.
Maruti Suzuki: Plants in India
Maruti Suzuki has manufacturing plants in Gurugram (Haryana), Manesar (Haryana), and Hansalpur (Gujarat). The plants currently make 18 models, including compact cars such as the WagonR, the Baleno, and the Swift, as well as SUVs such as the Brezza and the Fronx. The company also exports these products to about 100 countries globally.
"Over these years, we have been able to maximise production with the steady support of our agile workforce and value chain partners who have helped us manufacture products in line with customer needs. We remain committed towards ‘Make in India’ and have been strengthening our operations in the country, catering to domestic as well as global markets. We contribute nearly 40 per cent to the total vehicle exports from India," said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, MSIL.
Maruti Suzuki: A Look Ahead
Speaking of plants, Maruti Suzuki plans to "invest further" and increase annual production capacity to approximately 40 lakh (4 million) units by FY2030-31 from the current 22.50 lakh units. For that, the company will set up "two new green field manufacturing plants of 10 lakh capacity each at Kharkhoda-Haryana and Gujarat". According to Tata, the Kharkhoda plant will begin operations in 2025, whereas the plant in the State of Gujarat will be operational by FY2028. The company also intends to increase its range of products to 28 by FY2030-31.
