Maruti Suzuki will support Delhi Police in an initiative to implement a Traffic Safety Management System (TSMS) on the streets of the national capital region.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari along with Anil Baijal, Lt. Governor of Delhi, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Delhi Police and Maruti Suzuki India Limited.
As a part of the agreement, Maruti Suzuki will assist Delhi Police to introduce a Traffic Safety Management System along a 14 kilometre stretch from Dhaula Kuan to Sarai Kale Khan on Mahatma Gandhi Road or more commonly referred by Delhiites as Ring Road.
The TSMS will feature camera based image processing technology that can be used for Red Light Violation Detection System, Speed Violation Detection System and Automatic Number Plate Recognition. The technology has been developed in-house by Maruti Suzuki at their Institutes of Driving & Traffic Research (IDTR). Maruti Suzuki has been using similar technology for train drivers. Now, Maruti Suzuki has decided to push their drive towards Road Safety in India by implementing this technology to enforce traffic laws with transparency and create a culture of compliance.
Maruti Suzuki will set up the TSMS and maintain it for the initial two years. However, the commencement and operation of the system will be controlled by Delhi police. Maruti Suzuki has stated that the company will invest Rs. 15 crores on this initiative, and the project is likely to be operational in the next one year.
In India, around 1.4 lakh road accident fatalities occur annually. In 2017, 1,495 fatalities occurred on the streets of Delhi alone.
