The legendary American car maker, Ford Motor Company, announced that Alan Mulally has decided to retire from the company starting July 1, and Mark Fields will become the new Ford president and chief executive officer. Fields will also be elected as a member of the company’s board of directors.

Mulally headed the company for eight years of his illustrious 45 years at Ford, and he is responsible for the transformation of the company into one of the strongest leading automobile brands in the world. Fields was named COO of Ford in December 2012 and since then he has been leading all of Ford’s global business operations including product development, manufacturing, purchasing, and marketing, sales and service. Prior to this, Fields served as executive vice president and president for The Americas since 2005 where he turned around the company and brought it out from record losses into record profits.

The transition for Fields to his new post will be a smooth one, but there has been no official announcement as to the new COO of the company.
