The rear-wheel-drive Thar lifestyle SUV was launched by Mahindra in India in January this year. This model was launched in three variants: AX Diesel, LX Diesel, and LX Petrol, with prices ranging between Rs 9.99 lakh and Rs 13.49 lakh (ex-showroom). These prices, however, were introductory and were available only to the first 10,000 customers. The company has now hiked the price of the Thar RWD in India ahead of the implementation of new emission norms by Rs 50,000 but only for the Mahindra Thar RWD SUV's LX trim level, which comes with a diesel engine, manual transmission, and a hard top. The rest of the variants are still available for the same price. The following is the variant-wise pricing list for the Thar model.
Variants | New Price (ex-showroom) | Old Price (ex-showroom) |
AX (O) Diesel | Rs 9.99 Lakh | Rs 9.99 Lakh |
LX Diesel | Rs 10.99 Lakh | Rs 11.49 Lakh |
LX Petrol AT | Rs 13.49 Lakh | Rs 13.49 Lakh |

The Mahindra Thar LX RWD diesel variant with a hard top now costs Rs 11.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India) as a result of the price increase. With the price hike, the difference between the Thar 4X2 and the Thar 4X4 models is now only Rs 2.67 lakh. The Thar 4X4 variants' prices range from Rs 13.59 lakh to Rs 16.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Despite the firm beginning deliveries for the Mahindra Thar RWD in India, the lifestyle SUV still has a high 18-month waiting period, while customers can purchase the Thar RWD with a petrol engine in less than 5 weeks due to significantly lower demand.
Coming to the Mahindra Thar RWD's powertrain, there are two engine choices available. First is a smaller 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, which churns out 115bhp of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque. The lower-capacity diesel engine enables the Thar RWD to qualify for GST benefits on vehicles under 4 metres in length. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The other one is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which has a maximum output of 320Nm and 150bhp. The turbo petrol RWD variant only has a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
The Thar RWD comes with powered ORVMs, an infotainment touchscreen, cruise control, an electronic stability program, and 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres as standard. The design of the Mahindra Thar RWD is nearly identical to that of the Thar 4X4. The Mahindra Thar SUV's new RWD variant has the same tyres and alloy wheels as its 4X4 counterpart. In fact, the RWD retains all of the rugged design elements.
