Of late, Mahindra has hiked the prices for its lifestyle SUV, the Thar. This comes after the prices of select models – the Scorpio N, the Scorpio Classic, and the XUV700 – became expensive across the country. Post price revision, the Mahindra Thar SUV costs up to Rs 43,500 more than before. The second-generation Thar, which made its debut in 2020, is on sale in 11 versions, priced between Rs 10.98 lakh and Rs 16.94 lakh (ex-showroom). It is offered in hard-top, soft-top, and convertible body styles and comes in two core trims – AX (O) and LX. The Mahindra Thar AX (O) hard-top diesel MT RWD and the LX hard-top diesel MT RWD variants have undergone a significant price hike – they have become expensive by up to Rs 43,500 in our market, while the entry-level LX hard-top petrol AT RWD is now Rs 28,001 more costly. Mahindra has increased the prices of all other variants by Rs 16,200.
Mahindra Thar SUV: Engine
The Mahindra Thar is available in 2WD and 4WD options. Under the skin, the 4X4 version gets two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which churns out 150bhp and 320Nm, and a 2.2-litre diesel unit, which produces 128bhp and 300Nm. Both engines come mated to a six-speed manual as well as a six-speed automatic transmission.
The Thar 2WD, on the other hand, is offered with a 1.5-litre diesel engine (117bhp and 300Nm) and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine (150bhp and 320Nm). The diesel motor is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, whereas the petrol engine comes linked to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Mahindra Thar SUV: Features
Feature-wise, the Thar comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, along with halogen headlights with LED DRLs, steering-mounted controls, electrically controlled AC, removable roof panels, and cruise control. In terms of safety, the Mahindra Thar gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, hill descent control, traction control, rear parking sensors, and a front seat belt reminder.
Mahindra Thar SUV: Revised Prices
In the Indian market, the Mahindra Thar 4WD is now available at a starting price of Rs 14.03 lakh for the petrol variant and goes up to Rs 16.94 lakh for the diesel variant. The Thar 2WD, on the other hand, ranges between Rs 10.98 lakh and Rs 13.77 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.
Mahindra Thar 5-Door: India Launch Details
Meanwhile, Mahindra is gearing up to roll out the new 5-door Thar, which is expected to make its market entry in early 2024. The upcoming model will offer 4X4 and 4X2 powertrains and could be Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 more expensive than the current 3-door model. Expect the new model to come with a price tag of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom).

Ahead of its official release, the Mahindra Thar 5-Door SUV has been sighted multiple times, revealing some of its exterior and interior details. According to a previous set of spy images, the vehicle showed us the interior that includes a revised front armrest, a height-adjustable seatbelt, a newly added grab handle on the A-pillar, and a larger touchscreen infotainment system.
