The second generation Huracan is confirmed to be a plug-in hybrid. However, Lambo will not ditch big engines anytime soon.
Lamborghini is one of the few big shots of the supercar world that have resisted using any form of electrification in its lineup. The Italian company has remained in favour of making naturally aspirated V12 and V10 powered machines that stay true to the supercar essence.
However, for better or worse, things are set to change in the foreseeable future. While the Italian company had already confirmed a hybrid powertrain setup for its Urus crossover, it has now also revealed that the next-gen Huracan, due in 2022, will use electrification as well.
Fret not, as this does not necessarily announce the end of of big cylinder engines. Lamborghini firmly believes that there is still a big market for V10s and V12s in the future, and therefore, the company will stick to hybrid powertrain arrangements, and will not go fully electric. So, expect the Huracan replacement to house a big V10 along with electric motor(s) on board.
On the bright side, the replacement for Lamborghini’s flagship production car, the Aventador, is due before 2022, and is confirmed to be powered by a fire breathing, atmospheric V12, with no electric assistance whatsoever.
Talking about Lamborghini’s hybrid powertrains, they will rely heavily on the technology being developed within its parent company, the Volkswagen Group. Also, Lamborghini recently announced a partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop new supercar technology, which might help the Italian company with its hybrid future.
