The new Hyundai Exter has been receiving an overwhelming response ever since the SUV went on sale on July 10, 2023. Within a day of its launch, the carmaker said that the mini-SUV bagged over 11,000 bookings across the country. And in just about a month since its launch, the bookings breached the 50,000 mark, with automatic variants accounting for more than one-third of orders. Without any delay, Hyundai started customer deliveries of the Exter SUV a day after the launch, and more than 7,000 cars have been sold across the country, according to a July sales report. However, the entry-level variants, such as the EX and EX (O), are currently seeing a waiting period of 11 months (48 to 50 weeks), whereas other variants (including the CNG version) command a waiting period of about 18 to 24 weeks (roughly about 6 months). To refresh readers' memory, the new Hyundai Exter has been launched with ex-showroom prices starting from Rs 6 lakh and going up to Rs 10 lakh. Hyundai started accepting orders for the SUV on May 8 through offline and online mediums.
Hyundai Exter SUV: Market Rivals
The newly launched Hyundai Exter is available in 7 different variants – EX, EX(O), S, S(O), SX, SX(O), and SX(O) Connect. In the sub-4m entry-SUV sub-segment, the Exter has a close rival in the form of the Tata Punch. In addition, the Exter also takes on the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, the Nissan Magnite, the Renault Kiger, the Citroen C3, and the Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
Hyundai Exter SUV: Powertrain
Underneath the bonnet, the Exter SUV comes with a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol, 4-cylinder normally aspirated petrol engine, cranking out 82bhp of maximum power at 6,000rpm and 113.8Nm of maximum torque at 4,000rpm. On offer are either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission option. Whereas a 1.2-litre Bi-Fuel Kappa petrol with CNG unit makes 68bhp and 95.2Nm. The CNG version's transmission is handled by a manual gearbox. With the exception of the entry-level variant, all other petrol units are offered with both MT and AMT gearboxes, while the CNG-spec is available across the mid-spec variants – S and SX.

In terms of mileage, the Exter SUV is claimed to have an ARAI-certified mileage of 19.4km/l for the manual and 19.2km/l for the automatic. As for the factory-fitted CNG unit, the SUV returns a fuel economy of 27.1km/kg.

The interior of the car is all-black with semi-leatherette seat upholstery. On the feature front, the Exter SUV gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Hyundai's BlueLink-connected car technology, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a digital instrument cluster, a voice-enabled electric sunroof, a wireless charger, cruise control, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), automatic climate control, an inbuilt dashcam with a dual camera, keyless entry, a 4.2-inch digital display, rear AC vents, premium floor mats, paddle shifters, etc.
As far as safety goes, it packs in 6 airbags, a burglar alarm, electronic stability control (ESC), vehicle stability management, three-point seat belts and reminders for all five seats, hill assist control, ABS with EBD, rear parking camera, automatic headlamps, child seat anchor (ISOFIX), rear defogger, Day & Night IRVM (with Bluelink controls), etc.

Hyundai Exter SUV: Dimensions
Dimensionally, the Exter SUV offers a 2,450-long wheelbase, which is the longest in its category. With a height of 1,631mm, it is also the highest model in its category. These will guarantee the occupants more headroom and legroom.
