Hyundai and GM Partners to Develop Vehicles, Powertrains and More

General Motors and Hyundai Motor Company have teamed up to explore the potential of developing vehicles, internal combustion engines, and clean technologies including hydrogen and electric powertrains.

Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors have partnered to explore possibilities of developing cars, ICE engines, and clean solutions such as electric and hydrogen powertrains. Under this agreement, the global OEMs may also look at procurement of battery raw materials, among other things. Sharing her thoughts on the partnership, Mary Barra, Chairman and CEO of GM, said 'The partnership between the two companies has the potential to make vehicle development more efficient by driving greater scale and supporting disciplined capital allocation.' She further added 'GM and Hyundai have complementary strengths and talented teams. Our goal is to unlock the scale and creativity of both companies to deliver even more competitive vehicles to customers faster and more efficiently.'

Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group, also shared his views on the collaboration and said 'This partnership will enable Hyundai Motor and GM to evaluate opportunities to enhance competitiveness in key markets and vehicle segments, as well as drive cost efficiencies and provide stronger customer value through our combined expertise and innovative technologies.'

While Hyundai is currently operational in India with a vast product portfolio, General Motors ceased its operation in India in 2017.

Hyundai India Recent Developments

Hyundai recently introduced the Alcazar Facelift in India at a starting price of Rs 14.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The SUV is available in four variants (Executive, Prestige, Platinum, and Signature), and eight colour options (Abyss Black Pearl, Atlas White, Fiery Red, Ranger Khaki, Robust Emerald Pearl, Robust Emerald Matte, Starry Night, and Titan Grey Matte, and Atlas White with an Abyss Black Roof). It has revised headlamps, a new grille, fresh alloy wheels, a Creta-like dashboard, with slimmer AC vents, and a redesigned temperature control panel.

Mechanically, the SUV gets two engine options: a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol unit and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The former produces 157.8bhp and 253Nm, while the latter develops 114.4bhp and 250Nm. The Transmission options are a six-speed manual, a seven-speed dual-clutch, and a six-speed AT.
