After setting a global plug-in electric vehicle sales record of 3.41 lakh units (including 1,90,754 BEVs) in December 2023, BYD has rolled out its seven millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), the Denza N7, making it the world's first automaker to achieve this milestone. The Chinese giant produced the 1 millionth unit – the BYD Han – in May 2021, multiplying this figure threefold within 18 months. Then, it surpassed the five million unit mark in nine additional months, with the milestone vehicle being the Denza N7. And in 7 months from this mark, BYD accelerated to the 7 million milestone, exhibiting a robust end-to-end supply chain and the effect of scale.
In 2023, BYD's total sales of 30.24 lakh units represented a significant 61.9 per cent increase over the previous year, solidifying its status as the global leader in NEV sales. In comparison, in 2022, the Chinese brand sold over 18.50 lakh units. BYD says its proactive engagement with the international market has helped increase its presence. It witnessed a surge in overseas new energy passenger car sales that crossed 2.40 lakh units— a 337 per cent year-on-year growth—making it the leading exporter of NEVs in 2023.
Up to now, BYD's new energy passenger vehicles have been introduced to 64 countries and regions globally, with strategic investments in manufacturing facilities in Thailand, Brazil, Uzbekistan, and Hungary. This year, BYD has also become the official partner of UEFA European Football Championship 2024, showcasing its new energy vehicles on the global stage.
BYD: Looking Ahead
BYD says it is committed to broadening and deepening localisation strategies for its products, technologies, and brand presence across international markets, continuing to drive the global automotive industry towards a greener era.
BYD Lineup in India
In the Indian market, BYD – the world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles – currently sells the Atto 3 SUV (Rs 33.99 lakh), the e6 MPV (Rs 29.15 lakh), and the new Seal sedan. Launched on March 5 at an ex-showroom price of Rs 41 lakh, the brand's third electric vehicle sits on the e-platform 3.0 that also underpins the Atto 3 and the Dolphin; however, it uses an 800V electrical architecture.
The batteries, which are available in two sizes, get BYD's patented blade technology. The smaller 61.44kWh battery pack comes mated to a rear-axle-mounted electric motor, which makes 201bhp and 310Nm of torque, while the battery offers a claimed range of 510km. Meanwhile, the larger 82.5kWh battery pack claims a maximum range of 650km in the variants equipped with a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (308bhp). The 523bhp producing dual-motor and all-wheel-drive variants offer a claimed range of 580km range.
