Bharat Mobility Expo 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the second edition of India’s largest auto show at Bharat Mandapam, underscoring the country’s vision to become the global hub of mobility, driven by innovation and sustainability. In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted several key factors poised to fuel the growth of India’s auto sector, including a surge in demand from the youth and the emerging neo-middle class. Focusing on the future of green mobility, PM Modi emphasised the importance of electric vehicles (EVs) in shaping this vision. He stressed the need for innovations that can help develop batteries from materials available within India, along with advancements in storage systems. While significant progress is already underway, he called for accelerating these efforts in a mission mode to meet the nation’s ambitious goals.
The Prime Minister also noted that the government is making pivotal policy decisions to expand electric mobility and extend strong support to the industry. As part of its larger commitment to sustainability, India is investing heavily in green technologies, including EVs, hydrogen fuel, and biofuels. Modi remarked that the country is actively building a mobility ecosystem that balances both economic growth and ecological responsibility, with a focus on reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.
In an impressive leap, India’s electric vehicle market has surged by 640 times in the past decade. From just 2,600 EVs sold annually ten years ago, the numbers have skyrocketed to over 17 lakh in 2024. This rapid progress underscores the country's fast-evolving automotive landscape, driven by technological innovation and strong government support. If the current momentum holds, EVs are projected to increase by 8% by the decade's end.
