Volkswagen Group have given the green light to Audi and Porsche to co-develop and share technology and vehicle architecture for future vehicles.

Audi and Porsche have been working on numerous technologies for their future vehicles. Apart from sharing engines and platforms, between the two manufacturers, they haven’t ever really shared anything else. Now the top bosses at Volkswagen Group, the parent company, have given both manufacturers the green light to co-develop and produce cars of the future.

The objective for this collaboration is to accelerate research and development of electrification, digitisation and autonomous driving technology. While Porsche recently announced that they are fast-tracking their Mission E electric car project, Audi was been working on autonomous driving and connected mobility with their Audi Piloted drive programme. This new collaboration will let Porsche access to the technology developed by Audi, while Audi can benefit from Porsche’s electric technology.

Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG commented; “The best brains of both companies will together set the technical course for the future,”.

We will utilize the expertise of both companies and take advantage of synergies,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG. However, he does confirm that no matter what, both brand will have their own characteristics and will be well differentiated. He said “A Porsche is always a Porsche, and that will remain so in the future.”

While further details of the entire project are still scarce, in the coming months, joint teams of both brands will prepare the specific areas of cooperation and define the future strategy up to 2025. Both manufacturers will focus on joint development of shared vehicle architecture, modules and components.
