VW releases teaser for new compact SUV concept T-Cross, debut scheduled for Geneva
Volkswagen has officially released a teaser image of an upcoming compact SUV badged as the T-Cross Concept as of now. The Volkswagen T-Cross SUV concept will make its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show that will take place between the 3rd and 13th of March, 2016.
The Volkswagen T-Cross will share its platform with the next generation Volkswagen Polo and will be positioned to be a more practical offering of the hatchback. With the lifestyle vehicle segment becoming bigger than ever before, a compact SUV is just what Volkswagen needs to cash in on the segment internationally.
As seen in the teaser image, the new VW SUV will have a high set design to give it that butch SUV appearance along with chunky design elements such as the squarish LED fog lamp housings. That said, there are typical Volkswagen design cues incorporated into the design such as the sleek head lamps and design lines on the bonnet. Not much else is known at the moment, but the car will get black plastic cladding around the lower section of the car.
“The baby SUV looks very sporty,” said one company insider. “You will wonder whether it’s a VW at all; you may recognize the grille, but it’s a very exciting design elsewhere.”
“We will position production versions of the T-Cross and T-Roc underneath the Tiguan and Touareg in a part of the market that is currently experiencing large growth for SUV models, including Europe,” said a manager at VW.
Powertrain options for the upcoming T-Cross are not clear at the moment, but expect the likes of the 1.2 and 1.4 litre TSI engines with the seven-speed DSG autobox to serve under the hood. Diesel engine options could include the 1.6 and 1.5 turbocharged units internationally.
