Volkswagen’s Rs. 3,800 crore manufacturing facility in Pune has surpassed its target of 30.5% reduction in specific Waste Generation ahead of its four years plan.
Starting 2012, Volkswagen’s Pune plant undertook a number of projects in the direction of the environment friendly manufacturing as part of company’s ‘Think Blue. Factory.’ drive. Efforts are being made in five areas, namely, ‘Waste Generation’, ‘CO2 emission’, ‘Energy Consumption’, Water Consumption and ‘VOC emissions’.
At that time, each car produced 8.1 kg of waste. In three years, (end of 2014) the company has brought down that figure to just 5.63/kg.
The German car maker is also on the brink of achieving its target in the field of CO2 Emissions and Energy Consumption. For this, it has set specific reduction targets of 21.2% and 20.6% respectively. Efforts are being made in optimising operation of ‘Air Supply Unit’ in paint shop, lighting equipment as well as ventilation and achieve the set targets as soon as possible.
The company has also reduced water consumption by 14.4% through modifications made at the shower test facility in the factory.
Finally, various measures are being studied for reducing ‘VOC Emissions’ and the best practices will be implemented in the coming years.
