Volkswagen India drives in the hot new Polo GTI with a 1.8-litre TSI engine and 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Only 99 units of the 3-door hot hatchback are available for sale in India.
Hot hatch lovers, rejoice! The wait is finally over as Volkswagen has put the much awaited Polo GTI on sale in the Indian market. Priced at a whopping Rs 25.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the high-performance derivative of the Polo hatchback will be imported into the country as a CBU.
Globally, the Polo GTI is available in 3- or 5-door variants, albeit as of now we’re only getting the former version in India. The three-door Polo GTI will definitely help the sporty hatch to distance itself from its lesser counterparts like the Polo GT TSI and GT TDI. That said, there are a few more visual niceties on the Polo GTI to tell it from the regular models. It gets LED DRLs, a honeycomb grille with GTI badging, new front and rear bumpers, 17-inch alloy wheels, an integrated roof spoiler and a dual-tip exhaust end.
But, the main attraction of the Polo GTI is its powertrain. The Polo GTI is propelled by a 1.8-litre in-line four-cylinder turbo petrol motor that churns 189bhp of maximum power and 250Nm of peak-torque. Power reserves from the engine are channeled to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. Thanks to that, 0-100km/h will be dismissed within 6.7 seconds aboard the hot new Polo.
Commenting on the launch, Michael Mayer – Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, said, “The GTI is one of its kind in the performance hatch segment and is designed for the petrol heads who are well versed with the GTI philosophy. It seamlessly blends power with comfort that guarantees performance and an adrenaline packed driving experience. The one who drives a GTI need not to explain anything. He simply drives a statement. Volkswagen GTI remains the icon for all sporty cars and we are extremely proud to bring this phenomenon to India.”
On the safety front, the Volkswagen Polo GTI will come equipped with 6 airbags, ABS, Hill-hold and ESP.
Volkswagen has started accepting orders for the Polo GTI, but interestingly, the company says that it’s a “limited edition” for the Indian market. As a result, only 99 units of the hot hatchback are available for sale at the moment.
The Volkswagen Polo GTI does not have a direct rival in India, but it will compete against the likes of the Mini Cooper S and Fiat Abarth 595 Competizione.
