Volkswagen has revealed its all-electric car in the form of the ID.7 Tourer, which is set to go on sale in the European market later this year. The first electric wagon from the German carmaker is based on the ID.7 electric sedan – unveiled last year in April. Despite being a wagon, the new Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is dimensionally identical to the company's flagship EV, measuring 4,961mm in length, 1,862mm in width, and 1,536mm in height, while the wheelbase stands at 2,971mm. But, Volkswagen has made amends by offering a luggage capacity of 605 litres (with rear seats up), which is 73 litres more than the sedan. With the rear seats folded, the cargo capacity increases to 1,714 litres.
Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer: Exterior, Interior Highlights
While the exterior highlights include an extended roofline and a beefier rear section, the wagon's interior offers the company's new IDA voice assistant (with OTA updates) and a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The optional extras include a new Wellness app, massage seats, and a panoramic sunroof with smart glass, with the help of which owners can make the roof transparent or opaque with the push of a button.
Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer: Battery, Range
The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is offered in two variants: Pro and Pro S. The former is equipped with a smaller 77kWh battery pack that can be charged at up to 175kW, while the latter comes with a larger 86kWh battery that is designed for charging capacity of up to 200kW using a DC charger. Volkswagen expects that the top-spec Pro S will offer a range of 685 kilometres (WLTP cycle) on a single charge, which is 15km less than the electric sedan. In terms of charging capabilities, the batteries can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes (claimed).
Besides, both variants get a rear-mounted electric motor, churning out 282bhp of maximum power and 545Nm of peak torque. With this power and torque output, the electric vehicle can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in less than 7 seconds. The four-wheel-drive version of the ID.7 Tourer is also on the cards.
Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer: Availability, Rivals
For those unaware, the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is the production version of the ID. Space Vizzion Concept, which was revealed at the 2019 Los Angeles Motor Show. The ID.7 Tourer marks the German brand's entry into the electric wagon segment. In terms of market rivalry, the electric wagon will be Volkswagen's answer to the upcoming BMW i5 Touring and more, while it will be an indirect alternative to the Volkswagen Passat.
Volkswagen will build the Tourer at its Emden plant in Germany, where the company makes the all-electric ID.4. Speaking of the ID.4, the carmaker will likely launch the electric SUV in India this year. It will be imported to the country through a completely built-up (CBU) route.
