The partnership will see Volkswagen and LG work on smart-home connectivity services and develop next-gen infotainment systems for the group vehicles.
Volkswagen and LG Electronics have joined hands to develop a next-generation car connectivity platform for VW Group vehicles. The two firms will be jointly doing the research work, which they claim will enhance vehicle connectivity and convenience. Using cloud technology, the platorm will offer drivers seamless digital access including smart home and location-based services.
Now as per Volkswagen, the venture with digital partner LG Electronics will be mainly focusing on bringing technologies that connect the car with your smart home and developing next-gen infotainment technologies. For example, the former will allow the drivers to control and monitor smart devices in their homes such as security systems, domestic appliances, lights, etc., whilst sitting inside their car. The system will also have a context-sensitive notification centre, delivering messages to provide optimised recommendations to the driver in real time.
In its official statement, Volkswagen said : "Volkswagen is pressing on with the digitalisation of its brands. Our focus in doing so is always on our customers. For them, comfort, safety and energy efficiency play a central role. LG is a strong, reliable partner in the implementation of new features and one of the drivers of innovation in the networked household. We look forward to working with LG and to developing in future simple, easy-to-use smart home solutions for our customers integrated into our vehicle systems."
All said, this is however not the first time that these two firms are working together. Last year in March, Volkswagen's subsidiary Italdesign Guigiaro unveiled its GEA concept car at the Geneva Motor Show, which had seven key components supplied by LG Electronics. And this included some serious tech such as the holographic display, connected smart watch, etc. LG has also been selected as Volkswagen's strategic electronics supplier. Earlier this year, the two companies showcased a smart home system that could be controlled remotely from the vehicle at the CES..
