The new Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan has been revealed and the overall profile looks fairly intact. VW has loaded the car with equipment as it is aimed to be a premium offering in the segment
Volkswagen has officially revealed its new compact sedan, Ameo ahead of the 2016 Auto Expo. And at first glance, it’s instantly recognizable as a VW, mostly because its front end is identical to that of the hatchback it is based on.
It’s only a sharp crease on either side of the bumper that distinguishes the new model from the front. Look closer and you will notice how much the bumpers have been slimmed down. The side profile is again identical to the rear door, post which despite the compact proportions of the car Volkswagen as always has done an elegant job in profiling the car. A bold shoulder line runs from the headlamp to the tail lamp giving the lower section of the car a wider look. The rear profile of the car bears strong resemblance to the Vento mid-size sedan with its boxy tail lamps that are taller in the Ameo, straight design lines such as the top of the boot lid, in the middle of it as well and on the bumper, make it look a little slab sided at the rear. Two diagonal lines on the centre of the boot lid lend a nice visual appeal to the rear of the car.
The interiors are on par with the Polo and Vento featuring the same materials, plastics and switchgear. Volkswagen has kitted the Ameo rather well to take on the segment by loading it with a host of equipment and features such as a touchscreen infotainment system (recently fitted to the Polo and Vento too) with MirrorLink and Bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted audio controls, climate control, cruise control, auto dimming IRVM, rain sensing wipers, rear view camera, rear parking sensors, rear A/C vent and more. VW will launch the Ameo with dual front airbags and ABS as standard.
Powertrain for the new Ameo will be the same as that of the Polo too with a 1.2 litre, three cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5 litre, four cylinder turbo diesel engine. Both engines will be mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Although, like the Vento there will be a diesel automatic model as well that will feature the slick shifting seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
The Ameo measures 3,995mm in length to take advantage of excise benefits for compact cars. The Ameo has a 330 litre boot which is smaller than some of its rivals. But VW is looking to position the car has a premium offering with better build and ride quality, superior fit and finish, along with segment leading equipment.
All in all, the new Volkswagen Ameo does look like a promising product. Although we will have to wait a while before we can sample it as the Ameo is scheduled for launch June of 2016.
