The new 5-door Thar stands as one of the most highly anticipated Mahindra off-road vehicles in India. While glimpses of the SUV occasionally surface online, the SUV has yet to make a formal public debut. Despite Mahindra's silence on the matter, the Thar 5-door is expected to be available for purchase in our market shortly. Expectations are high for this variant to offer interesting features and enhanced design compared to its 3-door counterpart. Let’s take a look at what the upcoming Thar will feature in comparison to its 3-door counterpart.
Exterior
The Mahindra Thar 5-door, which is set to release soon, will sport several aesthetic improvements compared to the base model. These changes include a brand-new grille, a front bumper with incorporated fog lamps and reworked tail lamps. According to earlier reports, the new SUV will be longer and wider than its predecessor. With a longer wheelbase than the 3-door model, it is further expected to have a greater road presence. While there is no official confirmation yet, it is speculated that the car's top-end models will roll on 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, while the base versions will feature steel rims.
Interior
The 5-door version of the car is expected to have a different upholstery compared to its 3-door counterpart. It is also likely to come with significant upgrades, such as a redesigned centre console, a new digital instrument cluster, and a push-button start/stop system. According to the previous reports, the car will have a larger infotainment system with a 10-inch screen instead of the 7-inch touchscreen of the 3-door model. The new infotainment system is reported to have a bezel-free display and wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay support, in addition to other features.
Features
Apart from the above-mentioned features, it is also expected to get a single-pane sunroof, push-button start, rear AC vents, front and rear centre armrests, and six airbags are anticipated to be included with the SUV. Unlike the drum brakes on the rear wheels of the 3-door model, the new 5-door Thar will get disc brakes on the rear wheels.
There has been no formal confirmation yet, but it is believed that the upcoming Thar will have the same suspension arrangement and ladder frame chassis as the Scorpio N. As a result, it will come equipped with frequency-dependent dampers and a five-link suspension that will add to the off-road capabilities of the model.
Price
In India, the current pricing for the Mahindra Thar is between Rs 11.25 lakh and Rs 17.20 lakh (both ex-showroom). With major improvements over its 3-door variant, the new Thar is likely to be priced between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom). The new Mahindra SUV will compete against the Maruti Suzuki Jimny when it’s launched in India.
