Jeep will debut its upcoming compact SUV later this year. The car is expected to kick off the electrification chapter for Jeep with a possible mild hybridisation to begin with.
After previewing it in a full-EV concept form a few months ago, we now know that the upcoming Jeep small SUV will see a global debut sometime later this year. The car, which is likely to be called the Jeep Jeepster will first go on sale overseas before the company decides on its viability in India.
Since its first appearance, there have been plenty of speculations regarding the upcoming car. The car will raise the curtains of the brand’s electrification plans post which will further ramp up the electrification of its global line-up. The said car will be available both as a pure EV as well as a mild-hybrid powertrain. The plans for a hybrid car were first confirmed earlier this year in concept form as part of a wide-reaching electrification strategy.
Both the hybrid version and the pure EV version will come with a front-wheel drive (FWD) as standard. Higher variants, on the other hand, will get optional electronic all-wheel-drive (eAWD) where an electric motor will power the rear axle. The car will be based on one of Stellantis’ family of new STLA platforms. The smallest versions are likely to be closely related to models from sister brands like Peugeot e-2008 and Citroën e-C4.
In terms of design, the new ‘baby’ Jeep seems to be eerily similar to the upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEV, with slim headlights and 4x4-style chunky wheel arches. It is also expected to sport the same seven-slat front grille as every other Jeep model – even in electric form.
