Small cars or hatchbacks are garnering good sales over the past few years. Affordability and convenience could be two main reasons for their demand in India. Hatchbacks are ideal for city driving, as they offer better maneuverability and parking options, making them a popular choice for young people and families. With more Indian cities becoming congested, the demand for hatchbacks has only increased. Additionally, the increased availability of advanced safety features, such as airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control, have made hatchbacks a more attractive choice. Some of the popular hatchbacks in India include the Maruti Suzuki Swift, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the Hyundai i20, the Tata Tiago, and more. Several carmakers considering the steadily growing market of these cars in India are planning to bring some new models. Here's a short list containing some of the anticipated hatchbacks, which will start rolling on our Indian roads soon.
MG Comet
MG Motor India will launch the compact Comet EV by the middle of 2023. The name of the EV is inspired by a British aircraft that competed in the 1934 England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race. According to industry speculations, the 2-door electric vehicle could be the Wuling Air EV, sold in countries like Indonesia. Mechanically, the EV could get a battery pack with a capacity of 20 to 25 kWh and a single electric motor mounted at the front axle. The electric vehicle will likely have a 300-kilometre of range. Price-wise, the compact EV may cost between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh (All prices, ex-showroom). When launched in India, the Comet EV will compete with the Citroen eC3 and the Tata Tiago EV.
