Toyota unveiled their new fuel cell sedan called Mirai, which means future in Japanese. This four-door sedan has a range of 480 km and an hydrogen tank that can be refilled in less than five minutes. According to Toyota, Mirai represents a turning point for the automotive industry as it offers the promise of a world that is safer, greener and easier for everyone. Like all hydrogen fuel cell cars, it will be outfitted with an electric motor, driven by a hydrogen fuel stack, with only water vapour as its tailpipe emission. This ground breaking vehicle also has the cruising range of a conventional saloon.
Akio Toyoda, president and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, said, “This is a car that lets you have it all with no compromises.” He also revealed that the Mirai will start selling in Japan later this year and will arrive in the U.S. in the middle of 2015.
The revolutionary car will come with a price tag of around 7 million yen (about $60,000), and Toyota has said it hopes to inspire sales through the development of hydrogen refueling stations, with partners such as Air Liquide, who produce hydrogen. Together both the companies will begin developing 12 refueling stations on the US East Coast, that includes Boston, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
