Toyota’s version of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is set to debut in India on April 3. If ongoing speculations are true, the upcoming Fronx-based crossover may go by the name ‘Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor’, which was trademarked in India last year. Similar to the models produced under the partnership of these two Japanese brands, the new Taisor is anticipated to feature some cosmetic enhancements but retain the same mechanical configuration. For those unaware, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx SUV went on sale in April of last year, beginning at Rs 7.47 lakh. Its CNG variant hit the market a few months later, with an initial price of 8.42 lakh. Both are ex-showroom figures. While not confirmed, the upcoming Taisor, like the Fronx, can get a CNG counterpart later. As the Toyota crossover with the Fronx platform is about to arrive in our country, let's explore its potential features in more detail.
Toyota Taisor: Appearance
The new Taisor will most likely mimic the design of its Japanese cousin, with a few tweaks. These include a new grille, tweaked headlamps, updated alloy wheels, revised bumpers, and modified taillights. However, from the inside, the car will be identical to the Fronx, with amenities such as a 9.0-inch touchscreen entertainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a wireless charger, a multi-functional steering wheel, cruise control, automatic climate control, 360-degree cameras, head-up display, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, rear AC vents, connected car tech, and more.
Toyota Taisor: Safety Onboard
The crossover is anticipated to come packed with a plethora of safety features, including multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, ESP with Hill Hold Assist & Rollover Mitigation, three-point ELR seatbelts, parking sensors, and others.
Toyota Taisor: Under The Hood
The heart of the Taisor is going to be the same as its Japanese counterpart, the Fronx. Hence, the same engine options, including a 1.2-litre Dual-Jet Dual-VVT petrol and a 1.0-litre Turbo Boosterjet petrol, will be available with the new Toyota crossover. The former produces 89bhp and 113Nm with a 5-speed MT or 5-speed AMT, whereas the latter produces 99bhp and 147.6Nm with a 5-speed MT or 6-speed AT. In our market, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx also comes in CNG form, and the Toyota model is expected to follow suit.
Toyota Taisor: Price and Competition
The new Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor is likely to command a significant premium over the Fronx, on which it is based. For reference, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx is currently priced at Rs 7.51 lakh (starting, ex-showroom India). In terms of market rivalry, the Toyota vehicle will compete against the Tata Nexon, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, the Hyundai Venue, the Mahindra XUV300, and the Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
