2.87 million vehicles are fitted with faulty airbags and 1.43 million vehicles are recalled over a possible fault in emissions control system.

Another day, another recall by a car manufacturer – this time it’s Toyota. The Japanese car maker has issued a massive recall and is calling back 3.37 million vehicles, worldwide. As per Toyota, the company has identified problems relating to airbags in 2.87 million cars while 1.43 million vehicles have been recalled over faulty emissions control systems. Around 930,000 cars are affected by both the issues.

According to the statement released by Toyota, the evaporative fuel emissions control units in vehicles produced between 2006 and 2015 are prone to cracks, which may lead to fuel leaking out of the tank over time. Models affected by this issue include the Prius, Corolla and Auris hatchback. Of the 2.87 million affected vehicles, 1.55 million are in Japan, 713,000 in Europe, 35,000 in China and 568,000 in other parts of the world.

Recalls over faulty airbags is not something new for Toyota since it has recalled millions of cars since 2014 over faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata. However, the current airbag recall is not because of inflators supplied by Takata but by Sweden-based airbag inflators’ supplier, Autoliv. As per the Swedish firm, Toyota Prius and Lexus CT200h models produced from 2010 through 2012 may have been fitted with faulty airbag inflators that could develop a small crack in a weld, leading to separation of the inflator chambers. This may result in the airbag inflating partially without cause. So far, seven incidents have been reported owing to this issue, said Autoliv. The company also states that 90 per cent of the total vehicles affected by the current airbag issue are Toyota Prius models. No injuries or fatalities have been reported though.

As far as the Indian market is concerned, only the Corolla and Prius are the models that are affected from the current recall. Although, Toyota India has not announced any recall for cars sold in the country thus far.
