Toyota Land Cruiser ROX Concept

Toyota has showcased the Land Cruiser ROX Concept at the 2025 New York Auto Show, reimagining its iconic SUV with a bold two-door, open-top design. Developed by Calty Design Research, the ROX – short for "Recreation Open eXperience" – transforms the Land Cruiser 250 Series platform into an off-road-ready adventure vehicle. Over 50% of the body was redesigned, featuring custom "skeleton" doors, a sliding soft top, and a functional midgate for seamless cabin-to-bed access. Enhanced with a 4-inch TRD lift and 8-inch wider track, the ROX boasts 18-inch billet wheels, Spring Green paint, and Heritage Orange leather upholstery, blending rugged capability with vintage charm. While currently a concept, the ROX showcases Toyota's commitment to innovation and outdoor exploration.

Toyota Land Cruiser ROX Concept: Mechanical Components

Performance-wise, the concept retains its 2.4-litre petrol engine supported by a hybrid system, but the off-road hardware has been seriously upgraded. A four-inch suspension lift, combined with an eight-inch wider stance courtesy of forged aluminum control arms, boosts ground clearance and stability.

Oversized tyres mounted on one-piece 18-inch billet wheels sit beneath aggressively flared, trapezoid-shaped arches, reinforcing its off-road presence.

Toyota Land Cruiser ROX Concept: Design Elements

Originally based on the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, the ROX concept has undergone a dramatic transformation, with over half of its structure redesigned to create an entirely new identity. Its standout profile includes a sliding fabric roof and a reconfigured rear section as a compact pickup bed. The upper body has been completely reimagined, featuring uniquely engineered A-pillars inspired by trestle bridges and a rear pillar angled to accommodate Molle panels – ideal for securing outdoor gear.

Enhancements include grey roof rails with a triple-bar rack system, seven auxiliary lights positioned on the roof for off-road illumination, and a fold-down midgate that expands bed access for larger cargo. Painted in a retro-inspired Spring Green, the vehicle also sports a custom jerrycan, rugged steel bumpers with red tow hooks, a front-mounted winch, and open-frame “skeleton” doors above sturdy rock rails.

Toyota Land Cruiser ROX Concept: Interior

The Toyota ROX concept reimagines the interior with a focus on durability and adventure-driven design, while offering a refined edge. The cabin is lined with vivid orange leather for a pop of colour, contrasted by robust, 3D-printed SLS Nylon features like reinforced door sills built to endure the elements.

Door panels double as utility hubs, integrating compact safety gear and stretch webbing ideal for storing tools or trail essentials. With its open-air configuration, the ROX delivers an immersive driving experience that seamlessly connects occupants with the outdoors.

With this concept, Toyota signals a clear intent to carve out space in the rugged SUV segment, aiming at segment leaders like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.
