Toyota Hilux launched in India; prices start at Rs 33.99 lakh

Toyota showcased the Hilux back in January, and we were all left wondering what its price was going to be. It has now been launched and is available in two variants. Both can be had with the manual transmission, whereas the automatic transmission is only available in the higher-spec variant.

The Hilux has the same diesel powertrain as the Fortuner, which means that the automatic variant makes way more torque than the manual variant.

After having given us a teaser of what to expect back in January, Toyota India has finally launched the Hilux in India at a starting price of Rs. 33.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base Standard variant with a manual transmission. Check out the prices of all variants in the table below.

Variant/Powertrain

Price (ex-showroom, India)

4x4 Standard/Manual Transmission

Rs. 33.99 lakh

4x4 High/Manual Transmission

Rs. 35.80 lakh

4x4 High/Automatic Transmission

Rs. 36.80 lakh

The Hilux is only available with a diesel engine, and it is the same 2.8-litre motor found in the Fortuner. Same as that, it makes 201bhp and 420Nm (manual) or 500Nm (automatic) of torque depending on the transmission. All versions of the Hilux come standard with a 4x4 system.

The 4x4 system is a part-time system with a low-range gearbox as well. Apart from that, there is Downhill Assist Control (DAC), Active Traction Control (ATC), and an electronic differential lock. The system can easily be switched between 2WD and 4WD with the touch of a button.

The Hilux is not the most luxurious offering out there but it does get the basics right. There is an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and Toyota is offering a 6-speaker setup to compliment that. Then there is cruise control, steering mounted controls, auto-dimming IRVM, a cooled glove box, driving modes, and front and rear parking sensors. There are 7 airbags onboard, along with a stability management system, Hill Assist Control (HAC) and an ISOFIX mounting system.

The Hilux has only one real rival as of now, and that’s the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross. However, the Isuzu is far cheaper, with its top-spec variant priced under Rs. 26 lakh (ex-showroom). However, the Toyota does offer a far bigger engine, and whether it can justify that extra price is something we will find out only when we put them head-to-head with one another.
