Named after the well-known Hakone Turnpike in Japan, Toyota introduced the Hakone Edition, a unique edition of the GR86 for the American market in 2020. Based on the redesigned GR86, recently revealed for the Japanese market, the unique model has been revived for the MY2025. With the new Hakone Edition, Toyota has stuck to the same design strategy as the 2020 model. It is based on the GR86 Premium grade and has a Ridge Green finish. It comes after last year's Trueno edition, with a Performance package that includes enhanced dampers and brakes.

The Hakone edition is completed in a stunning green shade, called Ridge Green, just like in 2020. With a considerably flatter paint job, the redesigned special edition has toned down the shiny appearance of the original model. The colour-matched prominent ducktail spoiler at the back, a Hakone badge, and 18-inch satin bronze wheels round out the look.

Tan leather and Ultrasuede upholstery adorn the new sports seats inside. The carmaker has further added a new shift knob and GR special edition plaque to the model. Modified Brembo brakes with the required red callipers and Sachs dampers finish the upgrade package.

The special edition is based on the Premium trim level of the GR86 and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard or an optional six-speed automatic gearbox. As mentioned, the Hakone is outfitted with the same Performance Pack that debuted with the Trueno edition the previous year. Compared to the regular model, the package for the new-gen car includes larger-diameter rotor Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers.

It's not just the Hakone that has become more sportier. Toyota also adjusted the electric power steering and shock absorbers on the GR86 series to further enhance the lightweight model. For 2025 models with the standard manual gearbox, revised torque control and throttle mapping should improve throttle responsiveness and provide simpler rev-matching.

Other Updates

Toyota has also revised the rest of the GR86 line for the 2025 model year. First, there are new shock absorbers that promise better handling. Additionally, engine torque management is included to enhance throttle responsiveness and linearity, and the throttle mapping has been updated to make blipping on manual-equipped vehicles easier than before. Improvements have also been made to the electric power steering, making the car more responsive.

The 2.4-litre naturally aspirated (NA) four-cylinder engine, which produces 225bhp and 249 Nm of torque, is still the power source. It can be paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment on both models is a Torsen limited-slip differential. While manual vehicles have a Track option to sharpen things up, automatic models also get a new Sport mode to enhance shifting.

The price details for the car are still under wraps. There are 860 units of the special edition produced in the US. Toyota has not yet disclosed the price of the Hakone edition or any other 2025 GR86 model, but we anticipate learning more before they go on sale in the autumn.
