As per industry market surveys, these cars are more fuel efficient than their larger counterparts and also offer great value for money, which allows them to reign the auto sector with constant sales. Further, the Indian market is highly price sensitive, and these vehicles offer a great balance between price and features. Low maintenance costs and the availability of easy financing options augment the demand for these cars in our market. In India, several leading carmakers produce sub-four metre SUVs, including Tata, Maruti Suzuki, and more. These manufacturers enjoy a good number of sales of these SUVs in India owing to several reasons like high fuel efficiency, nominal maintenance cost, and others. Maruti Suzuki Brezza
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza clinched the top position in the segment with a sale of 15,787 units in February 2023. Last year at the same time, 9,256 units were sold, which marked a YoY growth of 71%. It is important to note that the sales information for February 2022 pertains to the Vitara Brezza before its facelift.
Tata Nexon
With registered sales of 13,914 units in February 2023, the Tata Nexon has dropped to second position in the list. The model held the top spot on the list of the best-selling SUVs in India for many months, including January 2023. Now, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza has conquered the sales charts and attained the top spot. In India, the Tata Nexon competes with the Renault Kiger, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, the Nissan Magnite, the Hyundai Venue, and more.
Tata Punch
The Punch compact SUV from Tata Motors continues to be the second best-selling model in the company's lineup. Tata Motors sold 11,169 units of the SUV in February, down slightly from the 12,006 sold in January of this year. However, compared to the 9,592 units sold in February of last year, it is still an improvement.
It is the only sub-compact SUV in its class with a five-star NCAP rating. The Punch is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is available with both manual and automatic transmission choices. The engine's mileage ranges between 18.82km/l and 18.97km/l. Additionally, the cabin has access to a number of high-end features. For example, a cooled glove box, a 7-inch infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch instrument cluster, and connected car safety that provides you with crash alerts, diagnostic reports, intrusion alerts, etc.
Hyundai Venue
Following the launch of a facelift in June 2022, sales of the feature-packed Hyundai Venue SUV have kept pace with those of its older sibling, the Creta. 9,997 Venue units were sold by the Korean automaker in the previous month.
The new Hyundai Venue diesel engine produces 114bhp and 250Nm of torque. The Venue diesel now has the same power and torque outputs as the Hyundai Creta thanks to a 6-speed manual transmission. Previously, the Hyundai Venue diesel had the same engine but with a fixed geometry turbocharger (FGT). This engine produced 99bhp and 240Nm of torque. However, due to the impending strict emission standards, this diesel engine model has been discontinued in India.
With its sub-4 metre SUV, Hyundai offers two petrol engine options – a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit and a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. The turbocharged petrol engine is capable of 118bhp of power and 172Nm of torque, whereas the naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 82bhp and 114Nm. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine is available with a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT, while the 1.2-litre petrol engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission.

Kia Sonet
The Kia Sonet is another Korean vehicle that entered the top five sub-four metre SUV sales list. In February 2023, Kia sold 9,836 units, fiercely challenging the Hyundai Venue. The X Line variant of the Kia Sonet is powered by a 1.0-litre GDi turbo petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. The 1.0-litre turbo petrol motor churns out 118bhp of maximum power and 172Nm of peak torque. For transmission duties, the same engine is mated to a 7-speed DCT. On the other hand, the 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine delivers 113bhp of power output and 250Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine is paired with a 6-speed torque converter.
